He later moved to Lodesville I don't know if I spelled that right or not but it is up the road from Amherst going toward Buena Vista. My grandmother (Victoria) was four year's old during the war and remembered some things." Victoria lived with Blanche and Benard in her later years. When Aunt Pete was a little girl, she had the opportunity to hear many stories told to her by Victoria. One such story follows as recalled by Aunt Pete. "Grandmaw's brother, I can't remember his name, wore riding boots and carried a riding crop. He was always striking his boots with the crop and the sound scared the little girl Victoria and she did not like him. Grandmaw told me about the rag doll that a slave made her. Her mother Betsy whipped the slave woman because little Vicky gave the slave butter in return for the doll. Grandmaw's father, Martin, would leave the army and come home during planting season and the soldiers would come for him. Betsy would say to the soldiers, "Set while I make food and prepare packages for traveling." The soldiers would sit down and mind every word Betsy said. Aunt Pete remakrs, "I don't think she was a nice lady." Grandmaw told me (Aunt Pete) about the slave weddings.
