Notes for CHARLES HARTLESS: Charles Hartless or Mason (last name not clear) inheirted 100 acres of the Lusk tract or survey on the east known as the Big Spring in Amherst of Rockbridge county for services rendered to James Clark Sr. This is taken from James Clark Sr's Will made in Rockbridge Co. VA. Rockbridge Co, VA will book Number 15 page 187. (Taken from Donna Huffer's History of Clark Family) Charles Clark was murdered at the home of John C. Clark where a cornshucking party was being help on Friday night November 15, 1891. Several Clark families abd neighbors had come out and some who were present were Buck Bruce (William Sr.), William Bruce Jr, and brothers Bob (Sylvester Robert) and Jim Robinson, Thomas Sorrells, Charles Hartless, and Ben Clark. When these men began drinking new brandy late that night, the fight started. Thomas Sorrells, son of Elihu Cooper and Susan Sorrells, was a large man with a bigger temper and huge capacity to drink. Tom Sorrells lost his temper around midnight with the Robinson brothers and a fight erupted. The younger William Bruce sided with Sorrells and struck at Bob Robinson. Buck Bruce jumped in to protect his son and drew a knife to stab Bob Robinson. Robinson was slashed several times before Charles Hartless jumped in to seperate the men. Unfortunately, Buck Bruce stabbed Charles Hartless in the throat, cutting him ear to ear. Hartless dropped to the ground dead. Tom Sorrells was given 10yrs in prison and because of his temper was later killed by Tom Clark in a shooting incident. |
