Descendants of Clark

Generation No. 5

16. ELIHU5 COOPER (JANE B.4 CLARK, LEONARD3, WILLIAM2, CLARK1) was born 1835, and died Bef. 1900. He married SUSANNAH A. SORRELLS November 09, 1869 in Rockbridge Co. VA. She was born June 1837, and died Bet. 1902 - 1910 in Rockbridge Co, VA.

Notes for E
LIHU COOPER:
Resided in Amherst Co and in Cooper's Hollow in the Deep Hollow Tract in Rockbridge Co.

The following taken from History of the Clark Family by Donna Huffer:

"A bible belonging to the descendants of Joseph Henry Sorrells lists his parents as Elihu Sorrells and Susan Bowling. No such marriage can be found. Susan Sorrells is founf on the 1850 Rockbridge County census licing with a Grant family on Irish Creek with her mother, Hanna Sorrells. Elihu Cooper was living next door with his family. This would explain how they met. For an unknown reason, the children on Elihu Cooper and Susan Sorrells chose to use the Sorrells name instead of Cooper while listing Elihu Sorrells as their father. This has caused great confusion to those truly wishing to trace the line. Those children born before the 1869 marriage certainly had the right to use the Sorrells name. Why those born after the marriage continued to use their mother's maiden name and why Susan herself relinquished the Cooper name after Elihu's death is puzzling.

As proof that Susam Sorrells was actually married to Elihu Cooper, I call your attention to the marriage record and depositions taken in the Rockbridge County suit "William M. Clark vs. Isaiah W. Clark's Heirs" in 1902.

July 18, 1902 Deposition of Sarah W. Tyree:
"Q. State what you know of the Deep Hollow Tract and Mrs Sorrell's claim?

A. The Deep Hollow Tract belongs to the Joseph Clark heirs. It is eighty acres more or less. It is bounded by Smith and Millner land and by the 640 acres tract and is opposite Hurlbut. Isaiah Clark told me that he just put elihu Cooper there to stay for the Clark heirs. The woman who calls herself Mrs. Sorrells now in possession is the wife of Cooper."

July 1, 1902 Depositio nof William M. Clark:
"Q. Please state how Mrs. Sorrells, wife of Elihu Cooper sometimes called Mrs. Cooper, got posession of the Deep Hollow Tract and whether she has any right of title or interest therein?

A. Elihu Cooper did not own any land himself - he was a renter and went to Isaiah Clark to rent land. Isaiah Clark told him that he did not have no place for him except the Deep Hollow Tract. He told him that he did not have any houses on the land but if he would go there and put up a house, he could stay there until he sold it and Elihu Cooper went to work there and put him up a house and moved on the property and lived there until three days before he died and left his widow there and she is still on the land."

Further proof that the children listed are actually Elihu Cooper's can be found in the Amherst County census records.

After taking a look at the 1880 Census, it appears that Mary is the only child that Andrew and Mary had together.
The other children can be explained by looking at James Dillard's information. (I think)

EMINA CLARK:
Taken from History of Clark Family by Donna Huffer: pg 23

Charles and Jemina Hartless had one son, John William Hartless, born 1864. Jemina suddenly died and Charles married Jemina's younger sister, Carrie Ann of Karen Clark. It is said by the family that Carrie Ann was so small that Charles carried her back to his home through the snow after the wedding. Charles and Carrie had 9 children, 8 of which lived to marry into other Irish creek families.

Notes for C
HARLES HARTLESS:
Charles Hartless or Mason (last name not clear) inheirted 100 acres of the Lusk tract or survey on the east known as the Big Spring in Amherst of Rockbridge county for services rendered to James Clark Sr. This is taken from James Clark Sr's Will made in Rockbridge Co. VA. Rockbridge Co, VA will book Number 15 page 187. (Taken from Donna Huffer's History of Clark Family)

Charles Clark was murdered at the home of John C. Clark where a cornshucking party was being help on Friday night November 15, 1891.
Several Clark families abd neighbors had come out and some who were present were Buck Bruce (William Sr.), William Bruce Jr, and brothers Bob (Sylvester Robert) and Jim Robinson, Thomas Sorrells, Charles Hartless, and Ben Clark. When these men began drinking new brandy late that night, the fight started.

Thomas Sorrells, son of Elihu Cooper and Susan Sorrells, was a large man with a bigger temper and huge capacity to drink. Tom Sorrells lost his temper around midnight with the Robinson brothers and a fight erupted. The younger William Bruce sided with Sorrells and struck at Bob Robinson. Buck Bruce jumped in to protect his son and drew a knife to stab Bob Robinson. Robinson was slashed several times before Charles Hartless jumped in to seperate the men. Unfortunately, Buck Bruce stabbed Charles Hartless in the throat, cutting him ear to ear. Hartless dropped to the ground dead. Tom Sorrells was given 10yrs in prison and because of his temper was later killed by Tom Clark in a shooting incident.
