Notes for CALVIN DILLARD SOUTHERS: Notes from Christopher Southers: Cal was born and raised in Riverside, Virginia. He began working on the Norfolk and Western Railroad when he was about nine or ten years old. The men would give him change to help out. Eventually he was hired on. Cal worked as a boilermaker for the Norfolk & Western Railroad. He was a gentle man who loved children, making sure that they always ate first in his house. People came from everywhere just to talk to him. (See note under CHRISTINE GORDON) Calvin loved children. Would get sad and drunk after Susie died. "Leave me be". Would have kids eat first at dinner. 5'9", curly brown red tinted hair, bald in back as he got older. Cal had curly hair, strong but not a big man. Fingers looked funny. Died of heart disease. Limp on each wrist. 150 lbs. Gave impression of a big man. Talked quiet. Didn't argue. Wanted to drink at home. Would take Susie her first coffee in bed. His first cup he drank from the saucer. Drank black coffee. Very respectful. As Susie reached her final days, Cal moved around as if he was in a dream. Doc gave her a 'kill or cure' shot with Cal's okay. She had been nearly comatose for three weeks. The railroad got the message to Cal when his mother died. Cal went to bed at nine every night after listening to the news on the radio, just like his daddy. Cal enlisted in the Army during World War I, but was only in a few months. He was called back home and allowed a discharge because his wife Cora was dying of tuberculosis. |
