ULIA MAYS:
Roslyn Southers recalls hearing that Julia, said to be part Indian, was often put off by Levi's drinking. Once, when she was pregnant, Levi came home drunk and threatened to wrap a snake around her neck. She told him that if he did, she would leave him. Shortly thereafter, she did indeed, going 'back to her people'. Whatever became of the child she carried is unknown. It could possibly be James Henry Southers was her son.

OSEPH WILLIAM FLOYD:
November 25, 2003

Know as Grandaddy Joe by all of his grandchildren and Joe by friends and family. He was retired from Reeves Bros. in Buena Vista VA.
He was always tinkering in his workshop / garage. He at one tine worked for a Chevrolet dealership as a mechanic. He was also a welder. He worked for a cup factory in Buena Vista years ago. I think he was a maintenance technician for the cup factory. He always told me stories about repairing the cup machine that inserted the bottoms in to the paper cups and how he learned to weld aluminum there. He later worked at Reeves Bros. in Buena Vista. I am not sure of his position, but I assume it was in maintenance as well. He talked about working with engineers and building equipment for production there. I always saw him in blue work pants, blue work shirt, and blue hat. It was his uniform. The only time he dressed differently was when he went to church. He planted a garden every year and I remember his growing corn, green beans, strawberries, cantalope and so on. He would work in his garage and repair washers and dryers, then he switched for repairing lawn mowers and tractors. As a child I remember his wearing his dress blues and he would have grease under his nails. He would rinse the grease from his hands with gasoline and I remember his eating wintergreen lifesavers. I can still smell the gas and lifesavers. He was a rather small man physically, but he had a big heart and you could count on him.

He always had a story to tell and enjoyed telling story after story after story when company visited. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed hearing and telling good jokes.

In 2003, grandaddy Joe got sick. The doctors said that he had cancer on his lungs and he had had a heart attack that damaged a good portion of his heart. Earlier the previous year he had a stroke in the garage while working. All of this didn't slow him down much. He continued to go to work in his garage as long as he could. When the time was close for him to be called to heaven he talked with all of his children about going to heaven. He told them that he was a saved man and that he wanted all of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on to become saved because he wanted them to meet him in heaven when their time came.

We all loved grandaddy Joe and I will miss him until I see him again.

Troy Floyd

Joe worked for Decker Chevrolet in Buena Vista, VA for some time and then worked at the local cup factory in maintenance until he was employed by Reeves Brothers as a maintenance tech. there in town.

Joe was a small man in stature. He was probably about 5'7" or 5'8" and weighed in at a massive 110lbs soaking wet.

Joe went to church regurally and participated in church activities. He played the guitar and several other instruments.

Joe was a big Nascar fan. When Joe was younger and his sons adults, they went in together and built a race car and raced it out at Natural Bridge raceway. It was a dirt track.
