AMES DILLARD SOUTHERS:
Note from Christopher Southers 7/4/2004

One day my Grandma (Roslyn) casually mentioned that Granddaddy Jim (James Dillard) and one of his brothers were not Phebe's children.
Grandma (Roslyn) tells me how her father (Calvin) told her that James Dillard and a brother, she was never sure which one, came out of the mountains and were taken in by the Southers family.

------------- Additional Notes from Christopher Southers -------------

Roslyn Southers recalls a story that her father Cal told her about how Jim and his brother came out of the mountains at a very young age. They came to a farm and were taken in. The farmer's name was Southers, hence Jim and his brother became Southers. In those days it was common for a family to take in the children of their kin or neighbors if they were no longer able to be cared for. There's no way of knowing which of James' two brothers the story refers to.

Roslyn also recalls that Grandaddy Jim always walked around with his hands behind his back and relates that Jim had at least two daughters that died. Roslyn's sister Rene gave her grandfather homemade dresses for the girls, who lived to be at least three years old. What happened to the girls is unknown.

Roslyn Southers recalls that Jim was real tall, big moustache like in cowboy days, curled up a little. Long arms. Jim called Susie Clem 'Sook'.

Jim always had time for the kids.

Jim went to bed at nine every night after listening to the news on the radio.

ARY ELISABETH NICELY:
Note from Christopher Southers 7/4/2004

By the time Mary had grandchildren she was heavy and had lost all of her teeth. Roslyn Southers recalls how she would slobber when she kissed you, something her brother Amos would avoid at all costs.

Mary's epitaph reads 'A Tender Mother And A Faithful Friend'

Roslyn Southers recalls a family story of how horrified Mary was by the violence and loss of life of the first world war, and how she swore that she'd never live through another war. She died the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, an act that catapulted the United States into World War II.

An interesting note on Mary was that after seeing the destruction of World War I, she often said that she never wanted to see another war. She died December 7, 1941

When Cal brought his family from Shenandoah to Riverside, Mary would always meet the train.

Roslyn recalls that Mary couldn't cook very well.

Notes for REV. MATTHEW GORDON SOUTHERS:
Roslyn Southers recalls that Matthew suffered either a sunstroke or heart attack that precipitated a fatal fall from a roof. She as well as Twilla Kent remember him being a travelling preacher and that he once hoboed a train from Buena Vista to Shenandoah.

There was an old well covered with boards behind Jim's house. Rose stepped on it, boards cracked & Matthew grabbed her, pulling her back. He showed her the well. He said he wouldn't tell Susie, but never to do it again.
