Notes for JOSEPH CALVIN SOUTHERS: Joe worked on the Norfolk & Western Railroad. A lineman, worked on the signal gang. Joe was an Infantryman in World War II. He was killed when a drunk driver ran his car off of a bridge as he was driving his fiancée Francis Woods to her job in Christianburg, Virginia. Joe had a bald spot in the back of his head that got bigger as he got older. Amos identified Joe by his bald spot after Joe's accident. Joe went down to the cornfield where 'Widder' Ryan and her men would have sex. Joe would later ask her "how the corn was". Ms. Ryan was a near neighbor. Would come out at night and cuss Joe. Joe was interested in her daughter. There was a three legged dog that Joe was suppossed to kill. He took it into the woods and didn't kill it. He'd carry it around to go hunting. Joe enlisted in January 1942 with Newton Armentrout & Hunter Long Jr.. Joe had some narrow escapes in France. Spoke of French girls. Joe joined the Army. Infantry then Tankers. Had a tank blown out from underneath him by the Germans. The last time Rose saw Joe he gave her two $50 bills. Told her that if she had it, pay it back, if not, it was hers. Joe lived in Radford with the signal gang. Joe left Christiansburg with his fiancee Francis Woods, who had to be at her job as a nurse in Roanoke by three. Snow began to fall. Ahead of them on the highway was a car full of teenagers that appeared to be drinking. They kept blocking him when he tried to pass. Joe grew impatient and tried again. It's unknown if the other car cut him off or if he simply lost control, but the car lost traction and began to skid sideways into a river bridge. An eyewitness reported that it looked like Francis' side of the car was going to take the impact, but then "like a mighty hand had turned it", the car spun around. Joe's side impacted first and the car went through the bridge, down into the icy river. Joe was killed immediately. The other car never stopped. At the time Joe was working as a signalman for the N & W Railroad. During the week, he would live in Radford in a modified boxcar with his fellow workers. They had indoor plumbing and heat and Joe took it in stride. He was well liked at the railroad and made many friends. One of these friends approached Cal at the funeral. Joe had made it a habit most evenings to come in and say a few words to him before going to bed. Joe had done just this on the night of December 5th. It wasn't until later that the man received word that Joe had been killed earlier that day. |
