Pitt owned a farm called "Pitt's Bottom", located on the Pedlar river. Everyone fished at Pitt's Bottom, friends as well as relatives. On census records for amherst co VA, he is listed as a farmer. In Amherst Co. VA Deed Book 'JJ', page 121, dated 20 Feb 1873, a deed is recorded showing that he purchased 40 acres located on the Pedlar river from Stephen E. Cheatham, his brother in law. Another deed recorded 21 Dec 1900 in Amherst Co VA Deed Book '51', page 7 indicates the purchase of an additional 102 acres located on the Pedlar river. He requested that the deed to this 102 acres be put in the name of his son John. In Deed Book '53', page 56, a deed was recorded on 2 Mar 1903 giving the City of Lynchburg the exclusive privilege of purchasing all of Pitt's land. The deed was signed by Margaret, Mary E., Pitt F., and Johnnie L. Stinnett.

Notes from email from Phyllis Cyrus Harvey

Pitney F. Stinnett is the way most record his name. He was known as "Uncle Pitt" by the neighbors and friends in his community, and his wife was called "Aunt Maggie". Several years ago I went to a homecoming at their church,, and met a Mrs. Davis, who was in her nineties, and she remembered Pitt, Maggie and John.
