Died due to stroke in 1973.

In 1944, he moved his family to Newport News, VA where he worked as a government employee.

Bernard was a diabetic.

Aunt Pete:

"When my dad started school he decidec to carry an Axe handle to protect himself from what, I don't know. He wanted to show everyone that he was Boss. Once when the Tobacco crop was loaded on the wagon, Dad's grandfather told him that he couldn't go to market with them. Dad (Bernard) waited until everyone had gone to sleep that night and he removed the braces holding the wagons from rolling. Down the hill went the tobacco crop. I don't know how much of the crop was saved and dad never said what was done to him for the deed."

Using a search on the Internet, I entered Bernard's social security number and found that he may have been a Railroad worker.
Social Security numbers beginning with 700-728 meant railroad workers thru 1963. http://www.investigateanyoneonline.com/ssn-aboutnumbers.shtml

From Phyllis Cyrus Harvey

Pitney F. Stinnett is the way most record his name. He was known as "Uncle Pitt" by the neighbors and friends in his community, and his wife was called "Aunt Maggie". Several years ago I went to a homecoming at their church,, and met a Mrs. Davis, who was in her nineties, and she remembered Pitt, Maggie and John.

Since Bernard died at Virginia Beach, I would imagine his deeds and/or will is recorded there. At least, Virginia Beach is what I remember. The last trip he made to this area was to attend my mothers funeral. He was in pretty bad shape then.

I remember Bernard and Blanche. I can bearly picture Ed Lee. When we were small children, we used to visit Buena Vista every couple of weeks. Most of the time we ate with Lou and Elmer, then went to visit with other relatives after lunch. Of course, we were always there for funerals.

I remember when Bernard's son Cecil was drowned. We were children, and in someone's kitchen. Blanche was standing at a sink or stove with Pete at her side. Apparently Pete had been in an auto accident of some kind and I remember her tlling Blanche that God had thought to take her, but decided Cecil was a better choice.

Strange what memories pop up when you least expect them.

Notes from email with Phyllis Cyrus Harvey 3/3/2007

I do remember Robert Cecil's death because my whole family attended his funeral. We spent the night at Lou's (Lou Stinnett) so we could attend visitation with the family.

I wish I knew what kind of accident your aunt Pete had been in shortly before he drowned. I can only remember her leg braces and crutches.

I also remember Bernard attending my Mom's funeral. I might have told you before, but that was his last trip to this area before he died, and his first in a long while.
