UGENE CHESTER FORBES:
From Eugene Forbes, we learned that his dad retired from the Cotton Mill and moved to Clay County. The family lived in Millerville, Talladega, Opelika, Alex City and Birmingham. Eugene remembered his dad talking about the trip west in the covered wagon. It seems Chester decided to give his dad's chewing tobacco a try and got very sick. Granpa said there wasn't enough for both of them anyway.

MB is a sweetheart of a man. He plays a mean mouth harp, and has an eye for the ladies. ( And we look back, too.) When I first met him in 1994, he told me about his memories of his move to Oklahoma. Back then there were not a lot of motels, so many folks stopped along the road to rest. MB said his dad was always afraid someone would rob them, so he hid his money. Now that's not unusual, but the place he chose to hide it is. He scooped out a little hole in the ground, then drove the car over it, so that the tire rested on the money, unseen by one and all. This worked fine until the day...you guessed it, he drove away without the money. The day was saved as well as the money, because it didn't take long for him to realize what he had done. He went back and the money was still there.

In the book, YOU ALWAYS THINK OF HOME, by Pamela Grundy, there is an interview with Elvadie Wallace, age 86...."My dad was from Georgia. He met my mother in Amarillo. She lived in Oklahoma, out ion Texas and Oklahoma. They got married. And years ago, people when they changed
climates, they'd have malaria. You've heard about it, I'm sure. You'd have chills and fever. So it wasn't long after they were married, the doctors told him if he didn't go back home, he was going to die. he
got so bad, he sold off everything but a covered wagon and a team, and he put the family and the bedclothes all in the covered wagon, and started back to home. And we traveled eighteen months in the covered wagon... My husband, Marshall, was plowing one day, and he fell between the plow handles. Something happened with his heart. He couldn't work the farm anymore. So we moved to Talladega. When we was up there, Marshall got him a job. He was with the foundry. And this union business came up. It was a closed shop. Everybody belongs. And the Primitive Baptists won't let you in join any other organization, period. He wouldn't join. So they sent him home. There we were with six children. No work. No money. House rent to pay. Utilities to pay. Groceries to buy. Well, he was in his forties and he couldn't find work. And on day I was talking to God..."What can I do?'..."You can answer lights." Work in the hospital and take care of patients. That's what we called it. Answer lights...God has taken care of me all of my life."
