==============================================================

The following story was told to me by Earl Sowder, son of Nanny Williams Sowder who died when Earl was only a few days old, so Grandparents Silas & Talitha raised Earl:
Silas, Talitha and family traveled to Oklahoma from Burning Springs, Clay Co, KY in a covered wagon in 1895 and settled in Indian Territory which is now Crowder, Pittsburg Co, OK. Silas, Talitha nor any of the other family members ever said why they left KY or the names of relatives left behind. Earl asked Grandpa Silas if the law was right behind them when they left KY and Grandpa got mad and chased Earl around the barn so he never asked that question again.
In 1918, Son Walter Howard Williams walked to Hartshorne, Pittsburg Co, OK. When Walter returned from WW1, Silas had moved the family to Orr, Jefferson Co, OK, so Walter had to track the family down in Southern Oklahoma.
Silas owned considerable amounts of land on Sexton Creek in Clay Co, KY. Durward Williams says that Silas and his brother John were loggers who rode the logs down the creek and swam under to dislodge logs. Durward said that brother John killed some indians on the 101 Ranch in eastern OK then buried them in a creek bed but they floated up when it rained so he did time in the federal pen at Levinworth, KS where he escaped by tunneling to a river and out swimming the laws. John and Silas came face to face in a grocery store but acted like they didn't know one another because John was an escapee.

Regonna,

The name of the cemetery is Crowder Cemetery, located in Crowder, OK. I don't know if we have a genealogy library in McAlester.

Barbara's e-mail address is barbarasulliva1715@sbcglobal.net. Bill's address, if I'm not mistaken, is sowder@comcast.net/

We had a really good time on our vacation. First we went to George's house which is about an hour from Branson, stayed there 2 nights and went on the Branson where we went to the Jim Stafford Show. Judi got us 2nd row center seats. We could practically touch him. That was thoroughly enjoyable.

We left Branson and went on to Nashville where we stayed in a motel and Bill came and picked us up and took us to his house for dinner. The next day Bill, Ceola, Barbara, and I went to The Hermitage (Andrew Jackson's mansion) and then on a tour of Nashville on foot. I went to the old Ryman Auditorium and stood on the stage where many of the country music singers have debuted and had my picture taken playing a guitar. I think that was the highlight of the trip. Next, we went to the new Grand Old Opry but by the time we got there it was closed for the day. They were having Fanfair 2005 that weekend and were getting ready for all the stars.

After Nashville we went to Illinois where my nephew Jason (George's son) was getting married. He had a beautiful wedding and afterwards cocktails and then a sit down dinner and dancing til midnight. I was very tired.

After the wedding we went to Springfield, Illinois where we went to the Abraham Lincoln museum. It has only been opened 2 months and still has the new smell in it. We then traveled to Springfield, Missouri where we went to the George Washington Carver Museum.

We left on a Sunday and were gone 11 days. I was dragging by the time we got home but I had a really good time.

Let me know when you get a chance to come up this way. Crowder is just about 15 minutes north of McAlester.

Hello Linda, So happy to hear from you...I would love to come to Mcalester one of these days. What is the name of the cemetery? Check with your genealogy library in McAlester. They should be able to point you in the direction of a headstone repair man. What are Barbara and Bill's e-mail address's? I have George's sowder@mo-net.com. I trust that you and Barbara had a nice trip with few problems.

Regonna,

Barbara and I went to the Crowder cemetery last Sunday and found Nannie and Henry's gravemarker. There is only one grave marker for both of them. On the base of the marker it said Williams. On the top of the marker it said Nannie W. Sowder, Henry. I think the W. stands for Williams. Anyway, the top of the marker has broken away from the bottom of the marker. Someone leaned it up against the base and that is how I found it. I yelled and screamed for Barbara. We had walked all over the cemetery thinking it would be a double marker or 2 small markers, but it was just one. If you ever get a chance to come to McAlester, I will take you to their gravesite.

I'm thinking about getting in touch with someone who might be able to restore the tombstone. I don't want to replace it I just want to get it fixed.

Barbara and I didn't find out anything from Bill about the Sowder side of the family. We are still working on it.
Linda
