  Notes for John Maitland, Second Earl of Lauderdale:
John Maitland, Second Earl of Lauderdale, attained paramount government of Scotland, under King Charles II. In 1672, he received the Dukedom with Royal Crest and Heraldic Device. In 1674, he was created Peer of the PCalm by titles of Baron of Petershan and Earl of Clifford, both in the count of Surrey. He was also a Knight ot the Carter, President of the Council, Extraordinary Lord of Sesson, Lord of the Bedchamber and Governor of Edinburgh Castle.
As John left no male issue, his Dukedom and Marquisate and his English honors became extinct at his death, but a great part of his landed property and hereditary titles descended to his brother Charles, Third Earl of Lauderdale.
