John Maitland carefully trained at home and on the continent. On the resignation of his father, SIR Richard Maitland, in 1567, John was appointed "Lord Privy Seal" by Regent Moray and a few months later was nominated "Lord of Session." In 1586, he was nominated Vice Chancelor of the Kingdom and the following year raised to "Office of the Lord High Chancelor."
In May 1590, he was created a peer at a corination by the Queen, by title of "Lord Maitland of Thirlestane." He was appointed to Office of Secretary of State which had been held for so long by his brother, William Maitland. In 1591, John resigned the office of Lord Privy Seal.
Thirlestance Castle was begun by John Maitland, b 1537, and completed by grandson John, b 1616, Duke of Lauderdale.
