Notes for Richard Maitland, SIR:
Sir Richard Maitland went blind in 1560. He was a celebrated collector of early poetry in Scotland which was deposited in Library in Magdalen College, Cambridge.
"The Maitland Club" established in Glasgow derived its name from Sir Richard and published his own poems along with his "Chronicle and Historic of House and Surname of Seton."
Sir Richard Maitland was married for 60 years to Mary Cranston of Corsbie and she died on the day that her husband was burried.

William Maitland was educated at the University of St Andrews. Afterwards studied Civil Law on the Continent. In 1558, Wm entered service of the Queen Regent and was appointed "Secretary of State" and mentioned as "William Maitland of Lethington, Younger Secretary to the Queen.
"Wm joined the "Lords of the Congregation" and took a leading part in negotiating the "Treaty of Berwick" between Elizabeth and the Lords of the Congregation. In 1561, Wm was appointed an "Extraordinary Lord and in 1568, was appointed an "Ordinary Lord of Session."
William's son, James, who withdrew to the Continent where he died leaving 2 two daughters. James Sold his Estate of Lethington to his Uncle John.
