Notes for HANS THONGES ANTHONIUS AHLBACH:

Also Ahlbach.  aka Anthonius: Hans Theiss.  Sources:  Maurice Neverman, "The Albaugh Project"  Sharon Paul.  Sharon and Muarice differ in their interpretation of early Albaugh genealogy.  Maurice feels that Hans Theiss and Anthonius were probably the same individual.  He supplies a death date of 26 March 1731.  Sharon's records (better documented) reflect her belief that there was an intervening individual _Hans Theiss Albach who was the father of Anthonius.  Her records show Adam's death date, with "Hans Theiss" being vor in 1635; having married Anna Margaretha (maiden name unknown) in 1661; and having died about 09 April 1722.  Anthonius is recorded by Sharon as being born in Flammersfeld in 1663; marrying 31 March 1688 Anna Margaretha Schneider in the village of Ahlbach.

Notes for ZACHARIAH ALBAUGH:

Spelling Ohlbach in some of ship's records.  He and Johan Wilhelm arrived on the ship "Hope" 1734 bringing Palatines from Rotterdam to Philadelphia.  See GMNJ and EGNJ references to this family.  Some of these children doubtless belong to Johan Wilhelm but no way to sort out which is which.

Both men took out 100 acre parcels in Hunterdon Co NJ on arrival.  From Jane Drever.

"A Genealogical Dictionary of New Jersey Complied by Charles Carroll Gardner Associated Editor of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey.  Printed from Family Tree Maker, Genealogies of New Jersey Families, Volume 11.  Alpaugh (Ahlbach, Albach, Albaugh, Alpock, Alpough, Ohlbach)  Zachariah Albach (Alhbach, Ohlback), b about 1698: Md Anna Dumat_______,b abt 1697.  On the ship Hope, brining Palatines from Rotterdam to Philadelphia in 1734, were listed under various spellings of the name, Ahlbach, Zachrias, aged 36, Johan Wilhelm, 28, Anna Dumat,37, Anna Eliz'a, 26, Joanis Wilhelm, 11, Joanis Gerard,6, Anna Margaret, 8, Gerderuth Margreta, 2, and Joanis Peter,2.  The ages, and the order in which the names are listed leave little doubt that "Zachrias" headed one family, and Johan Wilhelm another.  All settled almost immediately upon the 100,000 acre "Great Tract" of the West Jersey Society, which covered a large part of present northern Hunterdon County, and Zachariah and William Alback each took out leases of 100 acres from the Society's agent in 1735.  (Strassburgh's German Pioneers, 1:143-146: Jerseyman, 3:1-3.  No further mention of Zachariah is found and no description of his leasehold.  It was probably either between High Bridge and Cokesbury, or at Little York in Alexandria Tp.  The unusual name Anna Dumat, or Dimet, appears in several Hunterdon families, including Casper, Fischer, Hoffman and Sharp.  Probable children of Zachariah Albach and Anna Dumat

1. Joanis Wilhelm b abt 1723

2. Anna Margret b abt 1726

3. Joanis Gerard b abt 1728

4. Gerderuth Margreta b abt 1732.  Doubtless others."

Charles Carroll Gardner Associated Editor of the Genelogical Magazine of New Jersey wrote.  The exact relationship between the Hunterdon County family heads and the emigrants is not clear.  It is almost certain that each of the six was a son of either Zachariah or William.  If Charmers (CEG:231-3) is correct is stating that William of High Bridge was brother to George and Peter, and if the tentative identification of Peter as John Peter, son of the emigrant William, can be establised, it may be that William of Long Valley , and Morris of the same place (whom Chambers incorrectly calls father of that William, were sons of Zachariah.  This does not place John of Cokesbury, and until further records are found, there can be no certainty as to the parentage of any one of the six.  The sam applies to the female side, as an Anna Alpaugh is said to have md John Sinclair, b 1743, of Alexandria tp., and others married into various Hunterdon County families.  The earlier church records of Lebanon and Alexandria usually spell this name Ohlbach, but there is little or no significance to the many vatiations of spelling (SnHS:429)

In 1735, at the request of his father (who was agent for the West Jersey

Society), Lewis Morris  Jr. went to the "Great Tract" in HunterdonCounty, New

Jersey to arrange leases with the settlers. He found 98 families settled

there. They consented to sign leases, which were delivered to the succeeding

agent, Mr. Thyn. Zachariah Alback [sic] and William Alback each executed

leases for 100 acres. Charles Gardner, in his "Genealogical Magazine of New

Jersey" (October 1944), states that these lands were probably either between

High Bridge and Cokesburg or at Little York in Alexandria Township.

Presumably, Zachariah (1) Albaugh lies buried at what is now the Union Chapel

Cemetery near Libertytown, Maryland. At the time of his death, this was the

Albaugh family's private burial ground (on their land). It was later

incorporated into the Union Chapel Cemetery property. The Albaugh burial area

is at the far end of the cemetery furthest west from the church. (Margaret

Myers, private correspondence (paraphrased), cited by Maurice Neverman). I

believe it was Marjorie Kern who suggested that Zachariah's gravemarker may

have sunken into the earth, for it is no longer apparent in 1998.

Notes for JOHANN WILHELM ALLBACH:

Also Ahlbach Spelling was Ohlbach in some of ship's records.  He and Zacharias Albach arrived on the ship "Hope" 1734 bringing Palatines from Rotterdam to Philadelphia.  See GMNJ and EGNJ references to this family.  High probability he and Zach are brothers.  Note also that some of the children assigned to Zach are likely to be Johan Wilhelm's but have insufficient information to sort that out.  This is likely the William who was named overseer of Roads in Tewksbury in 1755. From Jane Drever

Charles Carroll Gardner Associated Editor of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey wrote.  William Albach (Johan Wilhelm Albach), b abt 1706: md. Anna Elizabeth ??, b abt 1708.  He was presumably closely related to Zachariah, who came to America on the same ship.  He soon settled in Hunterdon County, where he leased 100 acres in 1735.  (Strassburgh, I:143; Jerseyman, 3:43.  He was probably the William Albak chosen an Overseer of Roads of Tewksbury tp. in 1755.  (Tewksbury T.R.)  Children of John William Abach and Anna Elizabeth ?? 1.  Joanis Peter, b abt 1732; poss. identical with Peter Alpock of Alexandria tp.  q.v.  Doubtless others.

Child of JOHANN ALLBACH and ANNE ELIZABETH is:

15.              i.    JOHN WILLIAM5 ALPOUGH, b. 1739, Cokesbury, Tewksbury Twp, Hunterdon, NJ; d. April 01, 1821, Cokesbury, Tewksbury Twp, Hunterdon, NJ.

7.  MORRIS4 ALPAUGH (HANS THONGES ANTHONIUS3 AHLBACH, HANS THEIS2, ADAM1).

Notes for MORRIS ALPAUGH:

There is no mention of this Morris except in the records of John William who is reported to be "son of Morris".  Have assumed that Morris was a brother of Zach and William who perhaps came to NJ later.  The assumption seems reasonable give the appearance (again) of the name John William.

These children could be sons of Zach and J William, except that we now have three John Williams in theri sons generation and the two already assigned seem to fit well.

It is also possible that Morris was from a different family altogether

Children of MORRIS ALPAUGH are:

16.              i.    MORRIS5 ALPAUGH, b. Bet. 1735 - 1740; d. 1769, Roxbury Twp, Hunterdon, NJ.

Charles Carroll Gardner Associated Editor of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey notes.  George Alpock is said to have lived on the road from Cokesbury to Bray's Hill, and had one child bapt. in the Lebanon Church (CEG:232: Leb. Ch. Rec.) Eva b Feb 3, 1770

               viii.    JANE ALBAUGH, m. BEAMER.

11.  JOANIS PETER5 ALPAUGH (ZACHARIAH4 ALBAUGH, HANS THONGES ANTHONIUS3 AHLBACH, HANS THEIS2, ADAM1) was born 1732 in Holland or Germany, and died 1786 in Little York, Alexandria Twp., Hunterdon, NJ.  He married ANNA ENGEL, daughter of JOHN ENGLE and ELIZABETH.

Notes for JOANIS PETER ALPAUGH:

EGNJ show William, George and Peter as brothers who settled in the Alexandria area.  Therefore, the assignment of children to the two immigrant brothers by GMNJ is probably wrong, i.e. Joanis Wilhelm (William), Joanis Gerard ( George) and Joanis Peter (Peter) all belong in one family.  I have assigned them to Zacharais because of the age of the eldest but they could just as earily belong to Johan Wilhelm (who would have been only 19 when William was born - not unheard of.  Also the names all beginning with some form of John might suggest this is the more likely father).  From cousin Jane Drever.

Charles Carroll Gardner Associated Editor of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey  says this is Peter Alpock.  He says Peter Alpock, (Alpough, Ohlbach) b 1730-45, and possibly identical with Joanis Peter Albach, son of William, mentioned on p. 74; d at Little York, in Alexandria tp., before 1786; md. Anna Engle, dau of Jacob Engel of knowlton, and prob. the "widow Allpock" taxed in Alexandria in 1786.  He is said by Chanbers to have been brother to William, of High Bridge.  All but the oldest on of this children were bapt. in the Alexandria German Reformed Church, of which he was an Elder in 1771 and 1772.  (NJPRO; Jerseyman 3:38-45; CEG:232-5; NJA 35:135.

Johannes Peter Alpock (Johannes Wilhelmus4 Ahlbach, Anthonius3, Hans Thiess2, Adam1) was born 1732 in Germany (Source:  Strassburger & Hinke, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, 143-144, Zacharias Ohlbach 36 Johan Wilhelm Ohlbach 28 Anna Dumat Ohlbach 37 Anna Eliz. Notes for JOHAN WILHELM ALBAUGH:

There is no record later of a John or a William of this age in Hunterdon.  There is, however, a John William (noted to be a brother of George and Peter) with a reported DOB of 1732.  Per GMNJ, this date is derived from his date of death which reported him as 85 in 1817.  But the only J.W. to arrive on the Hope in 1734 was 11 years old (therefore born 1723-24).  Maybe the 85 reported above should be 95

Notes for MORRIS ALPAUGH:

Morris was born 1735-40, after families arrived in NJ.  As before, he could be a child of Zach or J William.

EGNJ has him listed as being much older, a contemporary of Zach and J William.  That is not consistent with the information in his will which lists all of his children as minors, nor with the probable ages of his children.  EGNJ also assigns grandchildren that probably belong elsewhere.

After his death, the family moved back to Tewksbury.  Jane Dreaver

Charles Carroll Gardner Associated Editor of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey wrote.  Morris Alpaugh(Allback), b about 1735-1740; d. in Roxbury tp, near present Long Valley, in the first quarter of 1769; md. Notes for WILLIAM ALPOUGH:

This is another assigned of a child to a family which is probable only.  His first child's name is Morris which makes brotherhood to morris a likely possibility.

One resource lists him as a "son of Morris".  If that is correct, Zach and William might have had a younger brother Morris - or there may be a Morris who was not connected at all.  In that case, this family assignment is incorrect.  Jane Drever.

Charles Carroll Gardner Associated Editor of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey wrote.  William Alpough (Alpock) b abt 1736-7; d 06/13/1811 in Upper Long Valley, Roxbury (now Washington) tp. History of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties of New Jersey ppg 420 Alexandria

The history of "Little York" No 24, dates back to 1809.  William A. Huff, Esq., now deceased, in a letter to Rev. C.S. Conkling, copied in his centinnial report says,

"About 1809 the people of Little York conceived the idea of organizing a school for that neighborhood, but they had no house.  In looking around they found an old deserted building on what was called the Hyde lot.  This was fitted up as a school house, and William Lee, an aged Irishman, employed as a teacher.  I was one of his pupils.  Soon, however, measures were taken for the erection of a school building.  Mathias Alpaugh gave the land, some gave money, some material, and others contributed labor.  In the latter part of 1810 the new building, which stood near Wright's (Globe) Mills was occupied.  The trustees were Benjamin Wright, William Alpaugh, and Mathias Alpaugh
