CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: "Thomas and Elizabeth James" were admitted to Boston ch
urch as members #149 and #150, which would be just before 14 October 16
32 [BChR 15]; on 14 October 1632 "Thomas James and Elizabeth his wife" we
re dismissed in order to participate in organizing the new church at Charl
estown [BChR 16]; on 2 November 1632 Thomas and Elizabeth James were admit
ted as founding members of the Charlestown church [ChChR 7]. "Mr. James" a
nd "Mrs. James" were on 10 March 1646/6 assigned their seats in the New Ha
ven meeting house [NHCR 1:302, 304].

EDUCATION: Matriculated at Cambridge, pensioner from Emmanuel, 1611, B.

OFFICES: Appointed to a Charlestown committee to divide the commons, 16

ESTATE: Surrendered five acres on Mystic Side, Charlestown, 1635 [ChTR 13
]. He had a proportional share in the hayground of seven, which was increa
sed to eight, 1635 [ChTR 19, 20], and had a share of six in 1637 [ChTR 32
]. He held five acres Mystic Side, 1637 [ChTR 27].
On 10 June 1637 "portions of grass and meadow" were laid out to several me
n, including "our neighbor James" [PrTR 1:4]. (This may be the same mead
ow referred to on 8 October 1638 by Roger Williams [PrTR 3:90] and mention
ed on 29 August 1640 as having been "laid out the last year" to five perso
ns, including Thomas James [PrTR 1:108].) In a deed dated 23 November 16
63 John Whipple describes a boundary as "a home share of land formerly bel
onging unto Thomas James (formerly an inhabitant of the aforesaid to
wn of Providence) but now in the possession of John Throckmorton" [PrTR 3:
98]. On 8 October 1638 Thomas James became one of the original "13 proprie
tors of Pautuxet" [PrTR 4:73, 14:274, 15:31, 236].
On 20 March 1639/40 "Thomas James of Providence sold to William Field of P
rovidence his lands, rights and privileges in Providence" [Chapin 1:109, c
iting Field Papers 3 at Rhode Island Historical Society]. On 9 February 16
45 William Field of Providence sold to William Carpenter land "lying betwe
en the top of the hill and the fresh river called Pautuxett River at Poota
tugock ... which I bought of Thomas James, John Throgmorton and Thomas Oln
ey" [PrTR 14:64]. On 27 March 1665 William Field of Providence sold to "Za
chary Roades of Pautuxet" two shares in "the neck of land called the lo
ng neck lying below the falls at Pautuxet" and "a little island circumfere
nced with part of Pautuxet
