DON GARDNER DIES

This section of Ward county was shocked at the news of the death of Don Gardner, prominent farmer of near Makoti, at the Minot hospital Monday night at 10 o'clock. He was taken suddenly ill on Aug. 12th and was hurried to Minot and immediately operated on. For several days his life was despaired of but later reports were to the effect that he was improving, and on the strength of these reports his friends expected to see him about again soon. But that was not to be. The hand of death was on him and he passed into the Great Beyond when hope was running highest for his recovery.
Don Gardner was one of the earliest settlers in this part of the county and grew up with the country, so to speak, in its development. His friends were as many as his acquaintance, and his passing has occasioned a deep sense of sorrow to all. At the hour of going to press the News has not been able to secure information as to the funeral arrangements. The bereaved wife and family have the sympathy of the entire community.

Death of Don Gardner

A few days since Mrs. W. W. Gardner received word that her son, Don, was seriously ill in a hospital at Minot, N. D. Monday a telegram said he was much improved, and that there were good hopes for his recovery, but Tuesday a third message conveyed the sad intelligence that he had passed away Monday night. Mr. Gardner was taken sick last winter and underwent two operations at Bismark, one for hernia and another for appendicitis. He became better and it was thought he would recover permanently, but about a month ago he suffered another attack and was taken to Minot where about a month previous to his death he underwent still another operation, this time for the removal of an abscess on the kidneys. He seemed to be recovering nicely until two weeks ago, when he was seized with a violent attack of hicoughing, that could not be checked and which continued for twelve days before the affliction was brought under control. It was then that word was sent that he was better, but his constitution was so weakened that the apparent betterment was but temporary.
Don Garfield Gardner was born at West Union, Iowa, October 3, 1878, and came with his parents to Lyon county when a small child. He lived here until about ten years ago, when he moved to Hancock, Minn., where he farmed for two years, and then moved to Makoti, N. D. where he took up a homestead, and where hes since lived. He was married to Miss Myrtie Rosborough, of this city, fifteen years ago, and is survived by the wife and two children, his mother, his sister Kitty Gardner and brother, Dan.
Mr. Gardner was an industrious, able young man, who had a friend in everyone with whom he was acquainted or came in contact, and his demise will be sincerely mourned by all his acquaintances.
The remains will be brought to the home of his mother and interment will take place in Riverview cemetery, beside his father and other members of the family

THE ROCK RAPIDS REPORTER - THURSDAY AUGUST 3, 1905

And So They Were Wed.

Don C. Gardner and Miss Myrta Rosborough were married at the Methodist Parsonage Saturday evening at 9 o'clock by Rev. E.S. Johnson. The Wedding was strictly private and it was not until Tuesday that friends of the young People became aware that they had stolen a march on them and were quietly enjoying the joke. Sunday morning Mr. Gardner went to Summit, S.D., near which place he is conducting a farm, while his bride returned to the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.I. Rosborough. Later, as soon as she recovers from the effects of the injury sustained at the time of the collapse of the seats in a show during the Old settlers picnic, she will join her husband in Dakota. Both of the young people are distinctly Rock Rapids citizens. They have both lived here since early childhood, and are known to all. Mr. Gardner has for several years past conducted a farm owned by his father, W.W. Gardner in what was the Sisseton reservation in South Dakota and his bride has been employed for years in the local printing offices. She learned her trade in the Reporter office, and was ever a faithful and competent employe. Both have a host of friends and the Reporter wishes them the greatest good fortune and a pleasant journey through life.

Tuesday evening a number of friends of the bride called at her home and proceeded to have all the fun possible. Their coming was unheralded and Mrs. Gardner was taken completely by surprise. She had been informed that the secret had leaked out and was expecting something of the kind, but the visitors waited until so late an hour that their victim's suspicions were lulled. However she quickly took in the situation and made the callers at home and a most pleasant time was had by all. A feature of the evening was a "tin" shower and it is needless to add that there was a supply sufficient to make a good sized showing at a novelty store.
