According to the best information, Johann Sebastian Shade, his wife, and family emigrated from Germany to Bern Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1727. Around 1747 he claimed 200 acres of choice farm land in what is now Shade Valley, Bell Township, Huntingdon Co., PA. Shade Valley, Shade Mountain, and Shade Gap were all named after him. The Shade families had large, impressive stone houses and large barns. They often built bank barns. The homesteads were well planned and built in the style of homes in Germany. During the winter of 1777-1778, the family hauled produce in conestoga wagons to the Continental troops stationed at Valley Forge, PA

===son George

pg 56 "Shade Family Ancestors" - lived in Bern Twp., Berks Co., PA where he attended a private school . When he was 19, he took a job grinding wheat into flour at a local gristmill and learned to make repairs to the mill . This gave him a knowlege to construct gristmills as an independent contractor.

As early as 1755 George built a house, barn and outbuildings in Pfout's Valley where he made his home until 1774.

=== George's son Sebastian

from pg57 "Our Shade Ancestors" - After the death of his father, Sebastian took ownership of the gristmill and operated it until June 11, 1794, when he sold the mill and moved to Lycoming County.
He purchased land in Buffalo Twp. near Mount Patrick or Berry Falls as it was then called. There he built a gristmill in 1788 and operated it until 1810 when he moved to the borough of Bellefonte, Center County where he probably spent the remaining years of his life.
