Charles joined the Navy during WWII. He served as a radar man on the USS Clay, which was a troop transport in the Pacific. Once, due to the long shifts , he fell asleep on duty and was placed in the brig. As a young man he played the clarinet and the saxophone. He loved sports and was an avid ball player. He played third base for many years. He loved gadgets and was thrilled with the new instant cameras and all the gadgets you could use on them. Fireworks gave him a real thrill.

Claire was working at Sears & Roebuck Department Store on Canal Street during WWII. She had a date for her Senior Prom but he was shipped out. One of her co-workers had a nephew that was in the Navy but was going to be in town on leave. He
took Claire to her prom and they dated after until he was shipped out. He wrote her and later sent her an engagement ring wrapped in toilet paper from overseas. Charles and Claire married after he returned from the war.

He was a quiet man. He bottled his own beer and would set it under the house he lived in on Port St to age. Often in the summer the bottles would blow their tops from the heat and the popping sound could be heard in their house.

Mary was a strong willed woman. She was a fine seamstress and sewed on a treadle machine until her death. She hid small amounts of money around her home. She lived on Port St in New Orleans in a shot gun house.

      7. Andrea Madere, born April 23, 1903 in Taft, La; died February 05, 1969 in New Orleans, La. She was the daughter of 14. Lucien Madere and 15. Thelezia Madere.

Lawerence loved hunting. He also loved to buy beat up model T's, take them apart and restore them. He would then sell them for enough to purchase another one to redo. He once won a live turkey in a raffle but could not bring himself to kill it for dinner.



  Notes for Andrea Madere:

Andrea was engaged to a man named Albert. Shortly before the wedding he was
found dead in the bath. The gas flame had gone out and he was overcome. When
he was courting Andrea he would bring his nephew along. After his death he
continued to visit and she eventually married him. In her later years she
loved to play bingo and scrabble and also loved to go to the horse races.

Katherin lost an eye due to a severe eye infection. In 1900, family lived in a rented house at 2509 N. Villere St in New Orleans, La. By 1904 the family owned the house at 1637 Port st in New Orleans.
