Notes for T
HOMAS MORRIS:
While in the midst of the Constitutional Convention in 1787 Robert wrote the following to his sons, Tom and Robert Jr. while they were at the University of Leipzig:

You, my children, ought to pray for a successful issue to their labours, as the result is to be a form of government under which             you are to live, and in the administration of which you may hereafter probably have a share, provided you qualify yourselves by       application to your studies. The laws of nations, a knowledge of the Germanic system and the constitutions of the several             governments in Europe, and an intimate acquaintance with ancient and modern history are essentially necessary to entitle you to       participate in the honor of serving a free people in the administration of their government.(1)

In the Spring of 1788 Thomas returned after seven years absence in Europe. He was to supervise operations on the Morris holdings of a tract in western New York State. In 1795 Thomas was busily negotiating a treaty with the Indians.

**Thomas settled in Franklinville, New York in 1807. He became a merchant there, operated a mill and was also a lawyer, which ultimately led to an appointment as Judge in 1814. Ischua became his home in 1825, when he settled on a farm on the Five Mile.
