Notes for R
OBERT CLARK MORRIS:
"Soon after the Battle of Yorktown, Robert & Molly Morris made a major decision: to send their two older boys, Robert Jr., now almost twelve, and ten-year-old Tom, t study abroad. Evan though the father had deliberately evaded formal education, he was determined his sons should learn several languages, mathematics, the sciences; "a liberal education," he said, "has its use in every station of life, and I am anxious that my boys should learn everything that can possibly be useful to them." Not only had American schools been disrupted by the war, but, as Morris told George Washington, "if the example is followed and it becomes the practice to educate American youths in France, habitual attachments will strengthen those ties of affection which in gratitude is due from this to that country." Morris asked Washington to intercede with the Comte de Grasse to obtain passage for the boys on one of the returning French frigates. Travel by sea still was perilous, but the venture was worth the hardships and hazards.

Pasage was obtained; from Yorktown on October 27, 1781, Washington sent word that he had just had the pleasure of welcoming the boys to Virginia; "for my Countrys sake, I rejoice in the Sacrifice you are making to your own feelings for the Education of the young Gentlemen, your Sons. . . ." Washington requested de Grasse to "show them every patronage in your Power to fulfill their Wishes and the Views of their Parents." The boys were accompanied by the Morrises' longtome friend, Matthew Ridley, who married Kitty Livingston, Mrs. John Jay's sister. To Jay, Morris wrote:
They are tractable, good boys. I hope they will make good men, for that is essential. Perhaps they may become useful to their       country, which is very desirable, and if they have genius and judgment, the education they will receive may be the foundation for       them to become learned or great men, but this is of the most consequence to themselves.

The boys were tutored in France, Then attended school in Geneva, Switzerland. After five years abroad, they spent two additional years at the University of Leipzig. Not long before Robert was to enter the university, his father heard reports that he had become careless about his appearance and clothes. "Whether I am rich or poor can be no reason for your being extravagant or nasty," the elder Morris wrote. He told his teenage son that his ambition was not to give him a large fortune, "but of teaching you how to make one for yourself."(1)

In the Spring of 1788 Robert returned after seven years absence in Europe. He was soon placed in charge of the Morris affairs at Morrisville, Pennsylvania, land that Morris had purchased near the Falls of Trenton.
