Notes for John Palmer Collins: From A BIOGRAPHY OF THE COLLINS FAMILY As given by ALEXANDER PALMER COLLINS In the year _____ my father , b4 John Collins, enlisted in the army under General Andrew Jackson, and was in the battle of new orlean, Jan 1815. After peace was declared he settled in Louisinana in the part known now as Covington. He married a Miss Zachery. to this union wer 3 boys and 4 gils namely: c1 Jack, c2 Henry and c3 Calvin C4 Eveline, c5 Martha, c6 Nancy and c7 Syntha. After the death of his first wife he moved to Franlinton, Washinton Parish, La. There he married Miss Mary Stringfield, my mother. To this union there were 3 gils and 1 boy, namely c8Ann, c9Adline c10 Salina and c11 myself (Alexander Palmer Collins). I was born in the year of 1847 month of may 23. All the family except myself have passed away. Three brothers and myself were in the War Between the states. The three eldest brothers were in the siege of Port Hudson. I was only in the war 10 months, this being on the account of my age." Page 5 JOHN P. COLLINS br John Palmer Collins was the son of Zachariah Collins. He was born in 1791 probably in Elber Co. Georgia, before his father moved from ther in 1796 to Jackson county. He died 5th Feb. 1873 in Lawrence co, Miss. The story below is the one that was told and written by his son, Dr. Alexander Palmer Collins, before his death in 1931: "John Collins enlisted somewhere in Tennessee with the famous Tennessee Rifle Men. These men were very rugged frontiersmen and were asked to proceed down the Mississippi River to join Jackson at New Orleans. This was in the early spring of 1814. This fete was accomplished with large rafts of timber. As to when they reached New Orlens, I do not recall; it was in time for them to join Jackson's forces before the actural fighting began. John Collins was wounded in battle; he had a scalp wound, but never gave up his gun. His head was bandaged and he went on fighting. He wore this scar in the center of his hair until his death. "After the surrender of the British, he and several other men, in dug-outs moved up the Mississippi River to Baton Rouge. They gave up the river trip, and moved over land and John Collins stopped at Covington, St. Landry Parish, La." The question has been asked as to why John Collins who came with the Tennessee men was signed into the Louisiana Militia to do his fighting. I do not know. His military record in Louisiana is listed as 10 & 20 Consolidated Regiment, (War of 1812), pvt. He is said to have been on the first raft landed in Baton Rouge, and while they were waiting for others of the group to land and he was sworn into Captian Samuel Leaven's Company of Louisiana Militia. He was discarged the 10th of March 1815 and must have arrived in Covington, La in April or May. Sometime near the year 1820 he married Cynthia Zachary. to this union there were seven children c1 John (Jack), c3 Calvin, c2 Henry, c4 Eveline, c5 Martha, c6, Nancy and c7 Cynthia. After the death of his first wife about 1835, when she was about 30 years old, he moved to Franklinton, Washinton Parish, and married Mary A. Stringfield (in Pike County, Miss. Oct 14, 1837). She was the daughter of James Stringfield (born in North Carolina in 1792 died in Louisiana about 1868) and his wife Elizabeth Sumrall( born in North Carolina in 1800, died in Louisiana about 1860) To this union there were born: c8 Mary Ann c9 Adline Louise, c10 Sarah Salina; and c11 Alexander Palmer. There were another two daughters c12 , c13 born to this union that died when 6 and 8 years old. After all of his children were born and having made application for a grant of land he moved to Lawrence co. Miss. His full name was John Palmer collins, but he was carried on Army record ad just John Collins and this has caused some confusion in searching for records. He died there Feburary 5, 1873 and is buried at Pleasant Grove, along with his last wive and a daughter, Martha Collins Mcguffey. The late Mrs. Martha Douglas Barlow of Jonesboro, La. had in her possession a silver flask and a leather bottle used by the Tennessee Riflemen and a leather water bottle used in the Battle of New Orleans. These relics owned by her grandfather, John Collins. ****************************************************************8 More About John Palmer Collins: Military service 1: 1814, Enlisted in Army under General Andrew Jackson and was in the battle of New Orleans Military service 2: 10 & 20 Consolidated Regiment (War of 1812) Pvt. "In the summer of 1957, being urged by a cousin, I began research on the family of Zachariah Collins, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, about the year of 1752, and according to family tradition is said to have come to America, along with a brother, Henry, by ship about 1779. He was signed into the Revolutionary army in Virgina and sent into the battle of Cowpens. There were other brothers settled on the Georgia-South Carolina line that had preceeded them and this was the cause of them settling there after the war. I did not know very many of my mother's people, but had been told that there had been a short biography of the family written by Alexander Palmer Collins that was in the possession of his family who lived near Winnfield, Louisiana. I began an attempt to locate his descendants, to get a copy of this paper, which I did in a very short time, and thereby had the pleasure of meeting, for the first time, one of the finest families in lovely Louisiana. Grady M. Collins, to whom this book is dedicated, had been the very capable "field worker". His interviews with older members of the family, especially with John Alexander Douglas, who is still living at West Monroe, Louisiana, and with others on trips that he made into Mississippi has ment more in this research than he will ever know. Erbon W. Wise, who is a descendant of this noble family has contributed his encouragement and help all through these months of heartaches, and I will say joy. He will be responsible for publication. ****************************************************************************** **** A BIOGRAPH OF THE COLLINS FAMILY As given by ALEXANDER PALMER COLLINS My grandfather, Zachariah Collins, was born and reared in dublin, Ireland. At the age of 18 years he sailed to England and from there in about the year of 1770 to Virgina. After the Declaration of Independence he was discarged and moved to the state of Georgia. There he married a Miss Palmer. To this union there were 4 boys and several girls, namely : b1_______, B2, Henry, b3 Abram and b4 John; the last mentioned being my father.
