Peter's mother's name was a Johnston , father was a Collins. His mother was Cherokee Indian, Tribe unknown. Peter's mother died in Childbirth, and he was raised by his father. After 1857, Peter, his wife Susan and their 6 children left Kentucky to make their home in Missouri. Susan died during the trip (before 1860, she was not listed in the 1860 census records) and was buried in or near St. Genevieve, Missouri. Peter was using Collins as his last name in 1860 census records, then changed his last name to his mothers Johnston. There was an old gentleman from Kentucky, who had probably come along with Peter and the others from Kentucky, and he told around that Peter's name was Collins, so Peter decided to go to court. The court officials told Peter he could choose whatever name he wanted, so he began going by Johnston. Sometime before 1870 he married a young woman named Cynthia. He is buried on Sinking Creek in Reynolds County, Missouri, near the farm of Edgar Johnson.
