BUTTELL 6 m M Bloomsbury, Middlesex, England Rel: Son Above we have the family of Joseph BUTTELL who was required to define the correct spelling of his Essex surname when he entered the Metropolitan Police in 1866 at the age of 19. Up until this time it had been written down in official documents in different forms. The following is the text of an article that appeared in a local Beckenham newspaper dated 1st May 1909, which is in the possession of Mr Joseph BUTTELL’ grandson Joseph. “THE CRYSTAL PALACE. It falls to the lot of a few men to be surrounded by seven grown up sons as was Mr J Buttell, Superintendent of the of the Goods Department at the Crystal Palace, on Saturday,1st. May 1909. Mr Buttell had for some years cherished the hope of one day having all his sons around him together as however some of them have been serving their country in military service abroad, it has been impossible to arrange the happy gathering until this year when all happened to be in England together for the first time for 15 years. Some had to travel long distances to reach home on Saturday, but the gathering was fortunately complete, all seven being present under the parental roof in the best of health and spirits. Mr and Mrs Buttell have had 13 children of whom 11 are living, seven sons and four daughters, and six have 'learnt to shoot', for they have either been in the regular Army or Volunteers and several are now 'with the Colours'. Mr Joseph Buttell is an old Metropolitan Police Officer. He joined in 1866 and started in 'R' Division. In 1869 he was transferred to 'A' Division and did his duty in the Royal Parks. His next move was to Bow Street where he spent 13 years. Mr Buttell was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in November 1882 and was transferred to 'W' Division and stationed at Barnstead, Surrey. At this place he completed 26 years full service and retired on Christmas Day 1892 on a pension. During his service in the Police he was on special duty at the fire at the Crystal Palace, the Alexandra Palace fire, Queen Victoria's Jubilee and at 20 Derby Days. After leaving the Police, Mr Buttell travelled England and Ireland for a London patent medicine firm and came to the Crystal Palace on 15th. May 1894. He took up the Superintendency of the Goods Department in 1895 and during his time in the office handled the material for some of the biggest shows ever held at the Palace. Mr Buttell is much respected by all whom the duties of his office bring him into contact. His seven sons are all, like their father, well built men. The eldest Ernest Buttell had an excellent record of 15 years service in the Royal Army Medical Corps before recently returning to private life. Nine of his fifteen years were spent on foreign service, and he was three times in South Africa. After the 1899 -1902 campaign he came home and was put in charge of the Military Hospital Stores at Christchurch near Bournemouth. From there he went to St. Peter's Jersey. Here he volunteered for trooping duty and this entailed six trips between Ireland and Bombay. He was ordered to South Africa again in 1903 from where he was invalided home and pensioned. The second son, Mr Horace Buttell is in business as a confectioner and tobacconist at Epson. Mr Edmund Buttell, the third son, is living in the neighbourhood. He was for six years in the Crystal Palace Company of the 'Queens' The fourth son, Mr Charles W. Buttell is in the RAMC. The fifth son, Mr Crispin Buttell, is also in the RAMC having been transferred to the Corps from the Royal Irish Rifles. Mr James Buttell, the sixth son, is in civil life but has spent three years in a Volunteer Cadet Corps at Shooters Hill. Notes for ERNEST BLOSS BUTTELL.: "The eldest son of Joseph Buttell is Ernest Buttell he had an excellent record of 15 years service in the Royal Army Medical Corps before returning to private life. Nine of his fifteen years were spent on foreign service, and he was three times in South Africa. After the 1899 -1902 campaign he came home and was put in charge of the Military Hospital Stores at Christchurch near Bournemouth. From there he went to St. Peter's Jersey. Here he volunteered for trooping duty and this entailed six trips between Ireland and Bombay. He was ordered to South Africa again in 1903 from where he was invalided home and pensioned." Extract from local Beckenham newspaper 1. May 1909. His son Joseph referring to the above extract, assumes that after a period of leave and when his father was fit to do so that he sought and found employment. As he was following 1909, in the employment of an elderly man of means who needed some one to look after his needs. Joseph has surmised that his father's training and experience made him a suitable and acceptable person for the post. He was based it a large country house. Employed in that household as a domestic servant was a Miss Ellen Oakley Ephgrave of the village of Bedmond. During the next five years she became friendly with Ernest. They began to meet each other when this was possible and slowly their relationship began to develop. When on the 4th August 1914 war was declared on Germany Ernest again, as a patriot, sought to rejoin the army. Ellen his fiancée tried to dissuade him pointing out he had already served his country well. As he had been invalided out in 1909 the Army were unwilling to re-engage him. Not to serve his country at this critical point in history was not acceptable to Ernest who kept trying to re-enlist. by 1916 he had succeeded in joining the Royal Flying Corp as a medical orderly. He volunteered to serve overseas but his application was declined. He served at bases of the RFC within the United Kingdom including Farnborough. Whilst on duty at Farnborough he sustained serious head injuries which involved one eye being dislodged from the eye socket! Fortunately it was possible to restore the eye and he recovered and continued to serve in the RAF as it had now become until February 1919 when he was demobilised from RAF Throwley, Kent. Now married Ernest and Ellen went to live with Ellen's brother George and his wife Emily at 169 Sandringham Road, North Watford. and their baby son Alfred. They were on the Watford Council housing list for one of the new houses being built on the Harebreaks Estate, North Watford. This estate was one of the first in the country to be built in the Lloyd George Government's post war plan to build houses "fit for heroes to live in" Prior to their being allocated a house they had their son Joseph, named after his Grand-father.
