John entered the service in Sayres's Company, First Virginia Regiment, as an ensign in July 1776. He was listed as ensign for that company on the muster for May 1777 but was transferred to Eustace's (Gibson's) that month and was promoted retroactively to second lieutenant as of November 1776. His whole tour there was on recruiting in Virginia except for August 1777 when he signed the company payroll. Promotion to first lieutenant came as of 12 August 1777 and a transfer to Cunningham's (Markham's) the next month. He was sick at Bethlehem, PA, from then through December 1777. The company muster rolls for September 1777 and January through March 1778 and the payrolls for December 1777 through March 1778 were signed by him. On 29 April 1778, he was killed at Valley Forge in a duel with 1Lt. Elisha White of Capt. C. Minnis's (Fleming's) Company. His father, Col. John Green, formerly of the First Virginia, collected his balance of pay on 7 March 1783. His heir-at-law, William Green, received land warrant number 108 for 2,666 acres on 1 February 1783 for John's service as a lieutenant (M. Lee Minnis, First Virginia, 1998, p. 246).
