View Tree for BARTHOLOMÄUS GÜDEMANNBARTHOLOMÄUS GÜDEMANN (b. August 24, 1623, d. February 13, 1686)

BARTHOLOMÄUS GÜDEMANN (son of JORG (GERG) GÜDEMANN and Elsbeth Schelshörnin) was born August 24, 1623 in Hausen, Baden, Germany, and died February 13, 1686 in Endenburg, Baden, Germany. He married Maria Grether on Abt. 1643 in Endenburg, Baden, Germany.

 Includes NotesNotes for BARTHOLOMÄUS GÜDEMANN:
In 1643, when Bartholomäus married Maria, the name of the village was variously spelled as Endburg and Entenburg. It was later changed to the present day spelling of Endenburg.

The Weitenau Cloister (now a drug rehabilitation center), of which the Endenburg church was an affiliate, kept no birth records prior to 1654. The years of birth of Johann, Maria, and Elisabeth were determined from death records. In view of the regularity with which Bartholomäus and Maria had children, we can assume that they had more children during the years between 1645, when Maria was born, and 1653, when Elisabeth was born. one of whom was Friedrich. No record of either the birth or death of Friedrich was found, but we know that there was such a son from the fact that he married Maria Trefzerin with whom he had a daughter in 1672.

The Weitenau Cloister kept no death records from 1693 to 1738. No records of the deaths of Friedrich, Anna, and Eva were found, indicating that they must have died after 1693.

Adam Jorgis, Maria's second husband, was a miller at the Weitenau Cloister.

Hans Trefzer, who married Eva, and Elisabeth Trefzer, who married Martin, were siblings. The marriages took place five days apart. When Martin died in 1741 and Elisabeth died in 1737 , they were both shown as "Güthemann" on their death records.

They placed immense importance on a child being baptized before it died. Sometimes, however, it was not possible to do so, as in the case of Friedrich's daughter, Maria, who was stillborn. The record stated:

The baby was stillborn. God wants to take the child into
Heaven even though it was not baptized. It will still be saved because of God's dear son Jesus Christ.

For reasons unknown, Bartholomäus was a frequent Godfather in the Kander River Valley to the north, a region where no Güdemann had ever lived. Almost surely, his contacts there led to his son Johann, our ancestor, marrying a bride from Kaltenbach and moving there.

No Güdemann lives in Endenburg today.

Our ancestors lived in Endenburg from about 1643, when Bartholomäus moved there from Hausen to marry Maria Gretherin, to 1686, when he died there.
