The Haber family from Hirlau, Romania

Updated March 19, 2004

About Our Family Research

The family consists of three main (known) branches, that descend from the children of Rabbi Meshulam Faibish HaLevi-Segal (Haber) from Hirlau, Romania:

The Haber branch- descends from Menachem-Mendel HaLevi, who lived in Hirlau. Descendants live mainly in Israel, USA, Canada.

The Ornstein branch- descends from Sarah (Sourke) Haber, who married Mendel Hersch Ornstein and moved to Burdujeni. Descendants live mainly in Canada.

The Aber branch- descends from Velvil (volf) Haber, one of Moishe-Chaim HaLevi's sons, who probably lived in Botosani. Descendants live mostly in Canada and USA.

We are still seeking the whereabouts of Moshe-Chaim HaLevi's other children:
- Shayndel Haber, who married a Tenenhaus. Their sons Aharon and Benyamin moved to Paris.
- Esther Ghitel Haber, who married a Popliguer.
- Yehudah Leib Haber
- Meyer Haber, who had immigrated to NYC in 1905. Two of his daughters were married: Tillie (Toba) to Nathan Greenberg, and Jennie (Shayndel) to Samuel Schulman. We know nothing about the families of his sons Joseph and Abraham, or about his other daughters Marry (Miriam) and Fannie (Fruma).

Any one with a connection to us OR that is originating from Hirlau- please contact!
