Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON HARPER, SR.: It seems that the Harper family moved to Illinois before 1850 and began to purchase public land. There are two George W. Harper purchases of 4000 acres each for 125 an acre that took place on March 25, 1851. Vol. III, p. 003 in section 033. Then on Dec. 16, 1853 a purchase of 4000 acres for $125 each ($5000) by James M. Harper, same township, and on Sept. 24, 1855 a purchase by Mark Harper of 3677 acres for $13. each, also in same township 05S and residing in 033. Are these our family? That seems like a lot of land to leave behind when they moved to Texas. More research needed on Hamilton County. When George died, his estate was probated in 1866 and his possessions consisted of 1 horse, 9 cattle, 20 hogs and 58 and 1/4 acres. Notes for WILLIAM DINWIDDIE HARPER: National Archive records show that William D Harper enlisted with his uncle Mark and brother George W. on August 13, 1862 in Knight's Prairie. His uncle Mark had to sign papers verifying he was 18 years old. After he lost his brother and his uncle had resigned, it must have been lonely and hard for William to carry on. The 110th was present for the battle at Murfreesboro in Dec. 1862. On Feb. 27 by reg. order it shows a comment "reduced to ranks" but not sure what that signifies. Then on March 13, 1863 he deserted in Readyville, Tennessee. There are no further records after that. He is described as being fair complexioned, with blue eyes, dark hair, 5 ft. 2 in. tall. Readyville is in the same north Cumberland area of Tennessee that he was born in. Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON HARPER: George seems to have purchased land in Illinois at the same time that his father did, on March 25, 1851. It also was for 4000 acres at $125. an acre. There are two IDs, one 315631 and 315632. The land lost value, because in the 1860 census what they own is only valued at $2000, and they paid $5000 for the 4000 acres. Need to check deed records in Hamilton County. Have not been able to pin down what unit he served in during the Civil war, but it is likely that it was Baird's Regiment, that seems to have been formed in Ellis County, Texas, where George and family had moved to after 1860. The Harpers met the Meredith family in Waxahachie and Joseph B. Meredith sold a small table to George and Elizabeth that had belonged to Elijah and Lee Ann Meredith, who had decided to move back to Tennessee. Joseph B. Meredith also served in Baird's Regiment. During the war, Elizabeth Harper, her children, and her in-laws, George Sr. and Susannah, moved to Fannin County. Archives records for a G.W. Harper who was a private in Co. E, 4 Reg't Arizona Brigade, say that on Sept. 5, 1864 near Brownsville, he deserted in face of enemy. There are no other records showing enlistment dates, or places, or details of age, etc. that would allow confirmation of this G.W. Harper being ours. I have checked all the other possible G.W. Harpers and none of the other ones fit. George committed suicide shortly after his father's death in 1866. This is based on court documents that show him alive at the time his father's estate is probated, yet his wife Elizabeth is buying out Susan's inheritance in Dec. 1866, so George Jr. must have killed himself shortly after. On November 10, 1862, in camp near Glasgow, Ky. he resigned as Captain due to his illness, which is described as continous fever. A doctor certified that the fever had persisted for four weeks and stated that "Capt Harper is very low and I fear will not recover and certainly cannot stand the winter campaign." Harper From: Times; pub. March 26, 1931 Mark L. Harper, son of Matthew and Amanda Harper, was born in Hamilton County, Illinois, July 5, 1854 and departed this life at his home west of McLeansboro, March 18, 1931, at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 13 days. Most of his life was spent in the farm where he was born. On September 12, 1886, he was united in marriage to Miss Irene McGuyer. To this union five children were born: Grace Harper of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Roy Mangis of McLeansboro; Mrs. Ernest Moore of Harrisburg; Mrs. Lester DeWitte of Benton; and Hoyt B. Harper of Chicago. In 1887 he professed faith in Christ and united with the Ten Mile Baptist Church. From the time of his conversion he never doubted or lost faith in Christ. He was a very devoted husband and was ever a real pal to his children. No sacrifice was too great for him to make if it meant the means to their happiness. He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, five children, eight grandchildren, one brother, Samuel H. Harper, and a host of relatives and friends. Words are feeble when it comes to expressing the grief that was felt by his neighbors and friends at the announcement of his unexpected death.
