Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM1 HILL was born Abt. 1735, and died November 10, 1792 in Surry Co., North Carolina.  He married HANNAH BRIDGES.  She was born September 17, 1742 in Carolina Co., Virginia.

According to extensive research done by Charles Massey, our William Hill is not the Wm. Hill with wife Susannah Smithers, nor their son Rev. Wm. Hill and wife Elizabeth Halbert from Stokes Co., NC. Our William, while living on Buffalo Island Creek, a tributary of the Dan River in North Carolina, in what is now Rockingham Co.(then Guilford Co.) near the Virginia line, lived next to Gustavus Hill, John Hill, and Thomas Bridges (Hannah's brother.)  Gustavus was married to Charity Lewis, who came from Halifax Co., NC, and almost all of Halifax Co. came from Virginia. The Matrimony Baptist Church still exists (1996) and its members included Gustavus and Charity Hill, a Margaret Hill, and William and Hannah Hill.
     William Hill had received his Buffalo Island Creek property as a land grant in 1780(N.C. Land Grant No. 298, Issued March 1, 1780), although he had probably been living there for quite some time. Wm. Hill sold his 382 acres on Buffalo Island Creek on March 10, 1788 and on January 10, 1789 purchased 380 acres on the Fisher River in Surry Co. (Surry Co. NC Deed Book D: 404-405.)
Thomas purchased 100 acres nearby on the Tarrarat River. A few years after the move, Wm. died and Thomas was the executor of his will. The land was deeded to brothers John, James, and Jacob.

This birth date is unverified. It came from a website, with no source included. From the Obituary of Abner Hill, p. 9- "except an old Grand Uncle of mine, Thomas Bridges, a brother of my grandmother, he obstinately stayed out..." This excerpt backs up Hannah Bridges as the mother of Thomas Hill, not Eliz. Halbert.

2.  THOMAS2 HILL (WILLIAM1) was born December 22, 1759 in On Dan River, Anson/Rowan Co., North Carolina, and died April 05, 1849 in White Co., Tennessee.  He married CATHERINE SHROPSHIRE July 10, 1783 in Guilford (now Rockingham) Co., North Carolina, daughter of WINKFIELD SHROPSHIRE and JANE JONES.  She was born September 1758 in North Carolina, and died February 14, 1854 in White Co., Tennessee (Source: Gravestone at Anderson Cemetery near Doyle, Tenn..).

 The Shropshires and Thomas Hill are on the census of 1791 in Wilkes County. In 1800 the Shropshires are in Oglethorpe County, but our Thomas Hill is not there, neither is Winkfield Shropshire.

Thomas Hill Private, North Carolina Militia, $30.00 Annual Allowance $90.00 Amount Received May 29 1833 Pension Started Age 76 (1835 TN Pension Roll) Thomas Hill, age 84 living with Winfield Hill (1840 White Co, TNGenWeb Census-Revolutionary War Pensioners) Buried with wife and next two generations in the Anderson Cemetery in Doyle/White Tennessee.

Thomas Hill apppears on the first tax lists for White County in 1811. He is listed with Abraham Hill and Elijah Hill and they are a part of Capt. James Randale's (?) Militia. In 1812 the Hill listings are Elijah, Abner, Thomas, and William listed together, and then John and James Hill are listed in another militia company. Thomas is shown in 1812 as having 356 acres, and his land is a grant entry occupant N.C. This amount of land changes over the tax years. 
	I am not certain how John and James are related-there is no John as a son, but there is as a brother of Thomas. In 1813 Abner, Elijah, Thomas and William appear together, and then John, James and Elijah are in Capt John Cummings Militia. Also appearing on that same page is John Meredith (p. 116) In 1816 in Capt. William Grimes Co. is John Meredith, Elijah, Thomas, Joab, and a Hill widow. This seems to be another Thomas Hill, because he has no land and he is listed as WP. Elsewhere that year is William and James Hill. In 1818, Elizabeth Hill, appears on the tax rolls. By 1821 Wingfield appears on the tax rolls for the first time. William seems to have the largest land holding, and has 2 black persons in his household. All of the rolls have classifications of WP and BP. In all the early years, there is no check for Thomas under WP, yet there is for his sons. Because he was over 50, he was exempt from paying a poll tax. Elizabeth Hill always has a BP checked. WP stands for White Poll and BP for Black Poll. 

The original deed for Thomas Hill's property is number 1038, on page 505 of the Land Grant Book maintained in Nashville by the Tennessee State Library Assoc. He received 100 acres on the waters of the Caney Fork. The land was originally granted to Micajah Henry as a State of North Carolina Warrant for military service, No. 4755 dated Feb. 27, 1797, and entered on Aug. 29, 1807 as No. 484. Thomas' grant of 100 acres was surveyed July 11, 1808, and bordered the land of John Chissum. The grant was signed by Governor John Sevier. This grant  is mentioned as being the Thomas Hill survey of 100 acres in the deed of Deed Book H, p. 55. Witnessed by Joel Smith, Elijah Hill and William Shropshire.

In Probate Deed Book, Vol. C p. 267, Thomas Hill deeds to Winkfield Hill 200 acres, known as the Thomas Hill survey. Dated April 7, 1845.

1811: in militia district of Capt. James Reynolds, Elijah Hill is shown with 150 acres that in 1812 is shown as being an entry deed.  In 1821 he owns 230 acres.
 FHL #0507908 Deed Book G, White Co. TN, p. 164-5 shows Elijah Hill sold to George W. Anderson in January, 1822 land on the north side of Caney Fork, Dist. 1 for $800.

White county tax lists:
James Hill appears in 1812 owning 50 acres of land, in same district as John Hill who also has 50 acres. In 1813 they are listed again in same district as Elijah Hill. In 1815 they all appear again in the same district. James now owns 48 acres. In 1816 James is now replaced with Hill Widow owning 48 3/4 acres.

Eleanor Comis Cummings was born in 1793/94 in Virginia, most likely Henry County, and she died about 1862 She was first married to James Hill, son of Thomas Hil and Catherine Shropshire and brother to Elijah Hill who married her sister Sara Catherine Cummings. James Hill died from wounds sustained while fighting in th Battle of New Orleans on January 12, 1815. This was a battle of the War of 1812 in which Andrew Jackson's troops defeated the British after the peace treaty was signed on December 24, 1814, ending the war of 1812. She was left young widow with four small children to raise. While she was yet unmarried, she had an illegitimate daughter by one Thomas Ripley and the father of this daughter was hauled into court by James' father Thomas Hill, and was forced to pay child support for his daughter. After about three years Thomas Ripley disappears from the area and no one knew where he had gone. Because of the scandal, Thomas Hill went to court to obtain custody of his four grandchildren by his late son, James. He won the court case.

Eleanor then married about 1819-1820 to Thomas Bryant Sparkman. The 1820-1830 census records of White County show that the daughter of Eleanor & Thomas Ripley is living in the home of Thomas Bryant Sparkman, and we can only assume that she more than likely took the Sparkman name. Nothing more is known about her.

It is interesting to note that Eleanor & Thomas Bryant Sparkman's first child, Lewis Sparkman was married and lived in White County for a time, before moving his family to Morgan Co., Alabama where his grandson, U. S. Senator John J. Sparkman was born in 1899. In 1952, Senator Sparkman was the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States on the ticket with Adlai Stevenson.

6.  ABNER3 HILL (THOMAS2, WILLIAM1) was born August 20, 1788 in Rockingham Co., North Carolina, and died Aft. 1866 in Gainesville, Texas.  He married (1) DELILA MARTIN.    He married (2) SALLY BARTLETT December 1806.  She died December 08, 1808 in White Co., Tenn..  He married (3) KATHERINE COTTON September 10, 1809 (Source: Abner Hill, "Obituary" by Abner Hill.).    He married (4) NANCY MATTHEWS September 28, 1848 in Hopkins Co., Texas, daughter of JOSEPH MATTHEWS.  She was born 1804 in Kentucky.

Notes for ABNER HILL:
Abner Hill sold his land to his brothers Winkfield Hill and Elijah Hill and his brother-in-law Ezekiel Bates in 1818. 
	Deed Book F, p. 361 shows the indenture of 97 acres to Ezekiel Bates for $525. Deed Book F, p. 371 mentions selling to Elijah Hill for $300. a certain parcel of land in the first district on the north side of the Caney Fork. Witnesses were Ezekiel Bates and Winkfield Hill. 
	On page 385 of Book F, Abner is recorded as selling to Winkfield Hill  50 acres, part of his 87 acre Abner Hill survey for $150. indenture. The land is adjacent to Ezekiel Bates' land and Winkfield's land.  Elijah Hill and Ezekiel Bates are witnesses. This same parcel is then sold by Winkfield to his father Thomas in 1829. This land is inbetween Doyle and Cave in the southern part of White County.
	Abner Hill was the first preacher and founder of the Church of Christ in the Sparta area according to the History of White County by Rev. Monroe Seals.

He married MARTHA PATSY ANDERSON.  She was born 1798 in North Carolina, and died February 15, 1854 in White Co., Tennessee.

Will Book Vol. D, p. 3: "Whereas on this 6th day of October AD 1851 the death of Winkfield Hill, late of the County of White deceased was suggested in open court and thus he departed this life intestate. Whereupon James A. Hill was appointed and qualafied administrater. Those are therefore to empower the said Administrater to ..." Recorded on Oct. 10, 1851. G.G. Dibrell Clerk
	In the inventory books of White Co., Vol. A, pages 210 to 212, on Dec., 1851, a sale of the deceased Winkfield Hill's effects took place. His tools, plows, etc. were sold to Elijah Hill, Martha Hill, L.J. Kerr, J.M. Sanderson, A. McBride, Catherine Hill, Joab Hill, among others. The total was $486.81. James A. Hill was the administrator. FHL #507883.
	In the final disposition of the estate: Will Book p. 202, after the sale and payouts the total to be divided among the heirs is $283.85 3/4.

In 1848- 1850 Tax Listings show Joab Hill in Dist. 3 with 300 acres, worth $450. James A. Hill has none, and Winkfield has 245 acres worth $900.

In Probate Deed Book Vol. D. , page 188, on Feb. 10, 1851, Joab Hill deeded to Wm. Anderson 30 acres, and to James A. Hill, 209 acres. It is interesting to note that the land of Thomas Hill, which passed to Winkfield, then to Joab, now passed to Winkfield's brother James A. Hill, instead of Joab's sons. It must have been an agreement the brothers worked out after Winkfield died intestate.

In Will Book 1841-1866 on p. 210, p. 153 (FHL #507899) On the 3rd day of October A.D. 1853 the death of Joab Hill late of the County of White Deceased was suggested in open court and that he departed this life intestate, whereupon James A. Hill was appointed and qualafied administrater....."

Notes for ELIZABETH PINNER:
When Elizabeth married Joab Hill, she was noted as Mrs. Elizabeth Pinner, which would seem to indicate that she was a widow who had a first husband named Pinner.That does not seem correct, given her young age.  In her later years, after Joab has died, she is living with George Howard and his wife Jane, the former Jane Pinner. Hill is shown paying taxes on this acreage. I believe this is the original 100 acre land grant to Thomas Hill.  What does E.H. Hill stand for? Elizabeth Howard Hill?

In 1850 appears on census in White Co., 3rd district, p. 35 married to Hulda (20, born in VA.) and living with what appears to be her brother William F.(23-VA.), and sister Evaline (16-TN.), and younger brother John M. age 12-TN.

Shows up on the White county tax list for the first time in 1876 in Dist. 1, paying a poll tax, but owning no land. In 1880 he is listed again in Dist. 1 as James Hill, and also E.C. Hill and L.D. Hill are listed, all with no land.  
In 1884 J.A. Hill is listed with 30 acres in Dist. 3, and four town lots. His 30 acres are next to Doyle's land. J.M. Hill is also listed in this district, without land. and Betsy Hill (Elizabeth Hill, his mother) is here with her same 106 acres that she has till her death. Dist. 3 must be the Doyle area, where the original land from Thomas Hill is.

The story must have gotten mixed up along the way because Gillington Chisholm, married to Cynthia Hill, would have been dead by this time. It was more than likely, this Lewis Chisholm, a medical doctor, who he met.

Notes for WILLIAM RANSOM HILL:
	William R. Hill, age 19,  joined the Confederate Army on July 26, 1861. He was recruited in Cave (near present day Doyle), White Co. and became a member of  Company C, of the 25th Infantry and was ranked a Sergeant. A reorganization took place in May, 1862 and Lt. Col. George C. Dibrell was not reelected, so Dibrell organized the 13th (8th) Cavalry Regiment and W.R. Hill transferred to this unit on May 10 1862. The 13th is also called the 8th as well as Gore's Cavalry. Source: Tennesseans in the Civil War. 
	Archival Records: Two records state he was Enlisted by Lt. A. B. Hardcastle on July 26, 1861 for 12 months in White Co. as a Sgt. in Co. C, 25 Reg't Tennessee Infantry. This was organized for State service on Aug. 10, 1861, and transferred to the service of the Confederate states on October 1, 1861. On October 1 muster-in roll he is shown as present, 19 years old, and Sgt. in Capt. Wm. G. Smith's Company of the 25 Regiment Tennessee Infantry. Another record for a company muster roll dated April 7, 1864 near Zollicoffer, E. Tenn. agrees he joined July 26, 1861 at Cave Hill, Tenn. by Col. S.S. Stanton. This record also states that he transferred to 8 Tenn. Cavalry on May 10, 1862. On the company Muster Roll for the 13th Cavalry,  W.R. Hill is serving as 2nd Lt. of Co. D, 8 Reg't Tennessee Cavalry. This regiment was organized as Partisan Rangers in September 1862, and consolidated into 10 companies. He was enlisted by Col. Dibrell in Sparta, Tenn. on Aug. 2, 1862. It states that he served as a 2nd Lieutenant for Co. D, 13th enlisted by Col. Dibrell, enlisting on Aug. 2, 1862 and on the Muster Roll from June 30 to Dec. 31 in 1864. Family history calls him Captain, and on the last muster roll it says he was "Commanding the Company" although he is still listed as a 2nd Lt. When Col. Dibrell was promoted to Brigadier General in July 1864, Capt. Leftwich, leader of Co. D, was usually in command of the regiment after Lt. Col. Dougherty was taken prisoner. So even though the Archives do not reflect a formal promotion, it must have taken place. The chaos of the last year of the war for the Confederacy meant that many records were not kept.  Another source is Amanda Hill's Pension Application #51979 filed in Hunt Co., Texas. That can be found in the book Johnny Rebs of Hunt Co. Texas p. 47, compiled by Frances Terry Ingmire, 1977, as well as the archival record from the State of Texas.
	His son's family history stated his date of birth as Nov. 8, however his tombstone says Nov. 9.
In 1870 W.R. Hill was the Tax Collector for the Railroad, filed the taxes in April 1875, p. 43-44 of Vol. 26 of County Court Minute Book. On p. 77 of same book, in Sept. 1875, W.R. Hill resigns his office as overseer of the Road, and Wm. Anderson was appointed to take over that position.

Tax Records: 1875-1886 White Co. Tax Books FHL #507970--Wm. R. Hill, living in Dist. 1. In 1875 owns no land. In 1876, he owns 100 acres, with a value of $750. This land borders Mat Anderson, H.A. Doyle, the Calf Killer River, and Wm. Anderson. In 1883 this same land is listed as belonging to W.R. Hill's heirs. I assume this is land that came from Mary Anderson.  It is during this time that Amanda Meredith Evans Hill's inheritance from her marriage to Sevier is being finalized. The land is put up for sale and W.R. Hill buys 365 acres of it. So now he owns two parcels of land in Dist. 1.

Land records: In Book W, p. 421 W.R. Hill on March 17, 1877 sold the mineral rights to G. M. Colbert for 100 acres on the Calf Killer tributary of Caney Fork of the Cumberland River. He would be paid $10. a year for the right to search for oil, coal, etc. That same year Elizabeth H. Hill signed a mining contract with the same party for her 106 acres.

Hill, Benjamin Gist, W.B. Cummings, etc. bind themselves to a $12,000 bond to the State of Tennessee to guarantee his honest administration of the office.

Notes for RUSSELL B. HILL:
In Vol. 9 of the Civil and Criminal Minutes, on p. 23, Russell Hill and David Williams are accused by State of Tennessee of assault with intent to kill a colored man named William Rutherford with sticks, clubs, and bludgeons on Oct. 1, 1874. The prosecutor is Nehemiah Rutherford, born 1841 in Virginia. They post a $500. bond in Feb. 1875, and then on p. 93 of same book the Prosecutor says he will not longer prosecute this case and the court costs will be paid by the defendant.

Russell moves to Texas shortly after this incident, because his youngest son is born in Texas in 1877-78. It is ironic that he settles in Ladonia, near the McFarlands. And even more ironic; he is buried in the Ladonia Cemetery, not far from his nephew Joe Meredith Hill. I wonder if granddaddy knew.

!NOTE:
(1) Came to Texas in 1887.  Worked on a farm near Hebron, TX, became a co-owner of a Men's Furnishings Store, "Campbell & Kerr", in Plano, TX. Later, he was a shoe salesman, traveling by train through Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, and parts of West Texas, including a few trips to San Angelo.
(2) In 1905, he bought a farm near Jacksonville, TX.  Here he pioneered in raising Elberta peaches and Acme tomatoes for shipment to market in refridgerated R.R. cars.  He also raised Duroc Jersey hogs for the market, as well as the usual crops of cotton and corn.
(3) He practiced soil conservation by terracing the land, rotation of crops and use of fertilizer.  All this was very "modern" farming for those days in East Texas.

In the 1870 census it shows David, 9, sister Milly 11, with mother M.E. Snodgrass 30, and M.A. Williams, 61, from North Carolina, if I am reading the handwriting correctly.
