Descendants of Unknown Meredith Generation No. 1 1. UNKNOWN1 MEREDITH Notes for UNKNOWN MEREDITH: To go back to the Virginia records; in 1810 there is in Hanover Co., Richmond a Wm. McCoy family (p. 50) and a James Meridith family (p. 64). There is a Nancy Meredith, widow, in Henrico, Richmond City (p. 338) and a Wm. McCoy (p. 424.) So those are two counties where Merediths and McCoys resided at the same time, besides the Dinwiddie County of 1820. Putting these three children together is speculation at this point. Children of UNKNOWN MEREDITH are: i. SALLIE ANN2 MEREDITH, b. 1784. 2. ii. ELISHA MEREDITH, b. January 15, 1792, King William Co. Virginia; d. May 13, 1873, Franklin Co., Tennessee. 3. iii. MARTIN MEREDITH, b. 1794, Virginia; d. August 1839, White Co., Tennessee. Generation No. 2 2. ELISHA2 MEREDITH (UNKNOWN1) was born January 15, 1792 in King William Co. Virginia (Source: Cemeteries of Frankllin County :FHL microfiche #6087715 - 2, p. 73, Elish MeredithBorn in King William Co. She was born July 01, 1800 in North Carolina, and died March 12, 1885 in Franklin Co., Tennessee. Notes for ELISHA MEREDITH: In the Will Book dated June 2, 1873 p. 476 is recorded the Will of Elisha Meredith. It leaves everything to his two daughters, Nancy, wife of Wiley S. Embrey and Elizabeth, wife of B.H. Emerson. It is odd that there is no mention of Hannah in the will. MARTIN2 MEREDITH (UNKNOWN1) was born 1794 in Virginia, and died August 1839 in White Co., Tennessee. He married MARGARET MCCOY 1817 in Virginia, daughter of MCCOY and UNKNOWN. She was born 1799 in Virginia, and died 1890 in White Co., Tennessee. Notes for MARTIN MEREDITH: Could his full name be James Martin Meredith? Martin Meredith is a big question. There are no land documents found so far. A Martin Meradith appears on the Franklin Co., Tenn. census in 1830. If this is our Martin, he is shown with 3 girls and 2 boys, the oldest boy between 10 and 15. This corresponds to the record, except that Martin is about 10 years older than what has been passed down as his birth date. This Martin Mradith is spelled differently and is not located near the other two-James and William Meredith. It could be that Martin was the child of John Meredith Sr. who appears on the 1820 census of Franklin Co., Tennessee, entry 1078, online image 22. There are 12 people living in the household. There is also a James Meredith and a John Meredith in two separate households. All of these Merediths have quite a few slaves in each household. In 1830 there is a James Meredith and a William Meredith also in Franklin Co. According to the births of the children, the family moved to White County around 1832. No Merediths appear on the tax record until Martin's appearance in 1839 in District 1 (Sparta). No other Merediths appear again until 1848, when Joseph Meredith pays his poll tax in Dist. 1. In 1850 there is an Elisha Meredith living in Franklin Co., who was born in 1792 in Virginia and is a brick mason with a wife named Hannah. (fam. 121, p. 10, Dist. 1) This would be a good bet to be the brother of Martin. He has a son named Elisha, age 10. He is also there in 1840, and was in Jackson Co., Alabama in 1830. Cannot find this Elisha, nor Martin anywhere before 1830. The connection to Elisha Meredith, Revolutionary soldier from Kent Co., Virginia has not been proven, but the popularity of this name would suggest some type of family connection. There is another Elisha, age 20, son of Elisha Meredith of Franklin Co., who joins the Civil War -Co. C. 1st (Turney's) Infantry, known as the "Mountain Boys." He is described as 5'10", dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, and was a brick mason, just as he appears in the 1860 census in Winchester, Franklin Co., TN. He went from Private to Sergeant, before he was killed in action at Cedar Run, Virginia, on Aug. 9, 1862. She is a widow over 45 years of age. On the same page is a Francis Meredith, also elderly. This might provide another starting point for more research for Martin Meredith and Margaret McCoy's origins. Margaret must have been a very strong woman, keeping her family together and always raising more. In 1850 she is living with her daughter Ann, sons Elisha, John, William. Also there is George Meredith (of uncertain parents), and Monroe Jones, daughter Matilda Jane's widow and Monroe's two children Andrew J. and James M. Jones. In 1870, she is living with Ann, William, George, and Andrew J. Jones. After the war, Margaret is living on a farm with son Edward and his wife Elizabeth (Ed and Betty). She is now 70 years old and living with Ann, and Andrew Jones and George. A woman, Ann Cody, age 32, also lives with them. The last census available is in 1880 and she and Ann are still living with Ed and Betty and now son James as well on a farm next to John Crook and wife Sarah. This is in Dist. 6, which is the Old Zion Community. I believe she is buried next to her sons Ed and James W. at Old Zion. There are two unmarked spaces next to the brothers and their wives. I believe they are the places of Margaret and her daughter Ann. MEREDITH: "Uncle Edd Meredith was captured and escaped from the prison boat by jumping overboard in the Mississippi River and swimming ashore. He always suffered from rheumatism the rest of his life from exposure he underwent." from "My First 85 Years" by Amanda Meredith Hill. In the account by Joe Meredith Hill, he recalls further that Ed and another escapee were so hungry and miserable after a couple of nights, that they let themselves be recaptured and then sent to a prison camp. Ed Meredith from Co. D, 8th Regiment appears on a roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas (Chicago), Illinois. Camp Douglas is near Chicago. The record states he was captured at Murfreesboro on Dec. 31, 186_. Roll 4, sheet 2. Dated Feb. 11, 1863. On Dec. 31, the 13th (8th) was with Gen. N.B. Forrest on a raid when he was caught by surprise at Parker's Crossroads, to the west of Murfreesboro. The regiment lost 8 killed, 35 wounded, and 130 captured or missing in the Battle of Parker's Crossroads. Ed was probably one of the captured. It is prehaps this battle where Ed and Elisha's brother John also turned up missing. There is a Confederate Pension application for Ed Meridith #S1571 who served in the 8th Cavalry. It says that on the 31 of Dec. 1862, he was wounded at Parker's Crossroads, shot in the groin by a grape-shot which made a rupture in his abdomen. He states that he was captured and taken to Camp Douglas (in Chicago), Illinois. He says that he was incapacitated for about 6 months. Then goes on to say that he stayed in the service of Confederate States until after the Battle of Franklin. He says he was cut off from his command in 1864, and was so afflicted he was unable to return. He did not sign an oath of loyalty to the U.S. until after the surrender. He has a wife, 55, no property except some furniture worth about $50. and is unable to work at all. This is verified by J.H. Snodgrass, M.D., and W.L. Dibrell, who vouch for him.Tthe application was dated Dec. 2, 1895. On the front it is stamped "Rejected" and some notes about insufficient and then "Dead." I agree that there is some inconsistency, and his wounds are not mentioned in the history written by his nephew Joe Meredith Hill, who knew him in the post-war years. Also, if he was in prison, how did he return to fight some more, was he exchanged? He does not mention this, but those did occur in the early years. Deed Book U, p. 585 records that Edward Meredeth and James W. Merdeth had bought 200 acres of land from Vance C. Lowry. Once known as the Rodgers (sp. ?) Mill place. In this deed Ed is selling his interest to James for $520.35. This must have been the land that is called Meredith's Mill in the skirmish that took place in 1862 when everyone signed up to fight. Probate Deed Book G, p. 110. Ed Meredith and wife Elizabeth sell their land for $1600. on May 25, 1870. (FHL #507895) Ed, his brothers, and friends seemed to get in a few scrapes and troubles in the 1870s. In June, 1876 Ed Meredith was charged by the State of Tennessee with "contempt of court and disturbing said court by loud talking and drunken and profane swearing..." p. 278 of Vol. 9 of Civil and Criminal Minutes of White County. In Feb. 1877 the Grand Jury indicted him of carrying a pistol, which carried a $250. fine, but the jury found him not guilty, on p. 446 of Vol. 9. More About EDWARD W. Meredith's Civil War military record with the 4th Regiment Arizona Brigade, Co. D, begins with the Regimental Return of February, 1864, where his is listed as 2nd Lt. of Co. D, 4th Reg't Arizona Brigade. He is listed as a Commisssioned officer, Present at Station Prairie Lea. In March he is present and located at Camp Patterson. In April he is at Gamp Green. In the Roster of March 1864, he is shown as a 2nd Lt. and under Remarks it says: By order of Lt. Col. D. S. (Showalter)Since Feb. 21 in Grayson Co. In the June Roster he is listed as present for duty and as a Jr. 2nd Lt. of Co. D. It also states that his "date of election or appointment" is August 7, 1863. The roster for Sept. 1864 repeats the Date of Election, and on a Regimental Return for that month lists him as being present at Palmeto, but under Remarks: Present Sick. He is also in camp in October, and in November and December is at Camp Hood (Kileen) Texas. This is the last record. She was born July 20, 1835 in Crossville, Cumberland Co., Tennessee, and died June 26, 1925 in Hillsboro, Hill Co., Texas (Source: Gravestone at Balch Cemetery in Alvarado, Texas.). Notes for ELISHA MEREDITH: Civil War Record: Elisha enlisted on August 2, 1862 in Co. D of the 13th Regiment of the Tennessee Cavalry under Col. Dibrell. There is no record of his being in another regiment before this one, although Lee Ann mentions enlisting in 1861. On Sept. 15, 1862 this division became the 8th Regiment, still under Col. Dibrell. This regiment moved from Sparta to Murfreesboro on Oct. 8, 1862 and was placed under Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. They fought at Murfreesboro (Stone River, Parker's Crossroad) on Dec. 31, 1862 where brother Ed Meredith was captured. This regiment went on to fight in many skirmishes, such as the local battle that took place on "August 2, 1863 General Dibrell, four hundred strong, engaged the Federals in battle at Meredith's Mill on Wild Cat Creek three and one-half miles North of Sparta. The Federals, four thousand strong, were commanded by Colonel Minton from Michigan. Twelve men and twenty-four horses were killed on the Federal side, and several Confederates wounded. This was in the forenoon. In the afternoon the Federals returned to the attack, reinforced by three additional regiments, while Dibrell was reinforced by two additional companies from Starnes's regiment. The Federals were driven back with a loss of forty-two. Fate Quarles and another scout were sent to see where the Federals went. They followed as far as Young's Mill and the Federals kept going." History of White County by Rev. Monroe Seals (with correction of year) This regiment was also involved in the Battle of Chickamauga on Sept. 19-20, 1863. Forrest, angry with Gen. Bragg's leadership decisions to not pursue the Union army after their victory at Chickamauga, quit the Army of Tennessee for a time and the regiment was placed in Gen. Joseph Wheeler's Corps where they joined Lt. Gen. James Longstreet. They remained in eastern Tenn. until March, 1864. Constantly engaged, by August 10, 1864, the regiment was reduced from the original 921 men to 140. On September 2, 1864 the regiment was furloughed to Sparta, which corresponds to Amanda Meredith's records when she remembers Jonathan Scott being killed and the Confederate and Union soldiers being there. From there scattered remnants pulled together a force of 1100 men, but only 300 guns. Some part of the 8th moved out, but others (Elisha) were on detached service in Middle Tennessee. Sources: The Civil War by Geoffrey C. Ward and Ric and Ken Burns, pp. 255-260., Tennesseans in the Civil War, Vol. 1, 1964. Elisha's muster records. Official records show one Elisha Meredith, a private in Regt. 8, who volunteered on Aug. 10, 1862, was 5' 10" with blue eyes, and brown hair, as having deserted the C.S.A. on Dec. 14, 1864 and then on January 28, 1865 he took an oath of allegiance to the United States in Nashville. Roll No. 572, sheet 13. Under remarks it states: "His family." as the reason for desertion. Because of this record, Lee Ann Meredith was denied a Widow's Pension in 1915 when she applied from her residence in Texas. She provided a document from J. M. Paul who states that he knew Elisha his whole life, was present when he was sworn in, and was with him when they surrendered in 1865. She seems very surprised to learn of the rejection, and appealed the decision by having Elisha's 2nd Lt. W. J. Little, who was living in Coleman Co., Texas at this time answer a series of questions, to which he replied that at one time in the war, Elisha obtained a substitute (Hop Vaughn) so he could go home and deal with family matters, but that he returned and served the duration of the war, and did not desert. Application #4523. In the Compiled Military Service Record of W.J. Little, he is shown as a Private throughout the war, and he was captured at Readyville Tenn. on Sept. 6, 1864. He was shipped to Louisville Kentucky, and then spent the rest of the war at Camp Chase, Ohio from Sept. 16 through Feb. 12, 1865. J.M. Paul, is John M. Paul, the husband of LeeAnn's sister Lizzie. John was 14 years old in 1862, and may have been in the service, but I can find no record of his presence in any Confederate army. He states in the pension request that he was in Co. B, 4th Tennessee. In the 1860 census, he was living in Fentress County, 12 years old, with his father Edley Paul, and mother. He would not have been old enough to serve until 1864. It is possible he joined at the end and the records were never official. It does seem that a lot of musters and promotions at the end of the war were never turned into official records for the Confederate armies in Tennessee. Land Records: In Deed Records Vol. Z, p. 266, shows an agreement where Elisha Merideth and Crocket D. Tracey will operate a distillery in the 1st Civil District for 4 years for the purpose of distilling spirits. They were purchasing the right from M.L. Clark and must pay taxes and penalties to the U.S. Government first. Dated March 26, 1879. In Deed Records Vol. 32, p. 428, reference is made to a lawsuit between Elisha Meredith Adm. vs. W.R. Hill et.al. This is to be found in Minute Book 18, p. 248, and the Minute Book of June term 1884, p. 562. In Minute Book Vol. 27, beginning on Sept. 5, 1881, defendant Mollie Evans is appointed a guardian to protect her interests in the Sevier Evans estate. Next the court orders that the full accounting of the debts owed and land owned be made to the court. The issue seems to be a lawsuit between Elisha who was administering the estate of Sevier Evans for his daughter Amanda, and his son-in-law William Ransom Hill, who is now married to Amanda. When Amanda's first husband died in 1874, she inherited his 360 acres of land in the 1st Civil District next to the lands of Thomas Snodgrass and Swofford and Scott. Since she was so young, her father Elisha must have been appointed the administrator of the estate. When she remarried Wm. Ransom Hill, he must have gone to court to get the land transferred to her and her heirs. On pages 247 - 249 on October 3, 1881 the accounting is presented to the court. A judgment was made in 1881 that the land would be sold at public auction. W.R. Hill paid $1750 for the land (Evans Cove), but the dispute must have continued. The public record in Deed Book Vol. 32, p. 428 signed Jan. 13, 1887, records the transfer. Another deed record in Vol. 31, p. 184-186 dated July 7, 1885, records that Richard Hill and wife Martha J. sold to Elisha Meredith land in the 1st Civil Dist. on both sides of the Turnpike Rd. leading from Sparta to Crossville where "said Meredith now lives" next to James Scott's land. It is 167 1/2 acres, purchased for $2500. In 1884 Elisha paid taxes on 150 acres worth $1200, bounded by Scott land on two sides. These are the last taxes Elisha pays in White County. I have not found a record of this land being sold. According to Amanda's memory, Elisha and LeeAnn returned to Alvarado, Texas in 1884, although the deed records seem to have him in Sparta at that time. He committed suicide in 1888 in Texas, after becoming despondent over losing a lawsuit over contested land (according to his daughter Amanda). There is no reference to which land left him despondent, although it seems it was the Evans Cove land, that was finally recorded in 1887. Lee Ann continued to live in Texas, burying Elisha in Alvarado, and then moving her family to Hillsboro, where her house still stands. JAMES W.3 MEREDITH (MARTIN2, UNKNOWN1) was born November 15, 1833 in White Co., Tennessee (Source: Gravestone in Old Zion Cemetery.), and died July 27, 1900 in White Co., Tennessee. He married (1) MARY LUCETTA LISK May 13, 1858 in White Co., Tennessee, daughter of JOHN LISK and NANCY CLARK. She was born January 13, 1840 in Tennessee, and died August 22, 1877. He married (2) MARY E. BEAVER 1890, daughter of ANDREW BEAVER and MANILA. She was born March 24, 1868, and died November 08, 1895 in White Co., Tenn. (Source: Gravestone in Old Zion Cemetery.). Notes for JAMES W. MEREDITH: Archival records for the Civil War show James Meredith first enrolling in Colms' Battalion, Company D with his brother Ed. Later he is in Company D, 8 Reg't Tennessee Cavalry (13th Tenn. Cav.) muster roll dated Oct. 12, 1862 shows he enlisted Sept. 26, 1862 in Sparta, Tenn. by Col. Dibrell with a horse valued $300, and equipment valued $25.00. National Archives. In 1860 Slave Census, James W. Merideth is shown owning 4 slaves: a 35 yr. old female and three children. Tax lists in 1863, while the Civil War is on, show James with 200 acres in Dist. 12, and both William and Edward are listed in this district, without land. (this must be what is referred to as Meredith's Mill on Wild Cat Creek in the Civil War skirmish) In Deed Book U, p. 586, on Jan. 6, 1866, James W. Merideth is selling to Waman Clark his land on the East bank of the Calf Killer River, the Barlow Fisk corner, which includes the grist mill, 200 acres. He is actually borrowing $600 from Clark to pay his debts. If he does not pay it back in the year, then he forfeits this land to Clark. John Lisk, and James Scott are the security for this note. (Waman Clark must have been a good friend, note his eldest son is named for him.) He also sold an oil lease and right to mine for oil on the land that same year, Book U, p. 553. Vol. Y, p. 598, on Aug. 15, 1877 J.W. Meredith and wife Mary L. Meredith and Lurana G. Leftwich sold to Jesse Martin 5 acres in Dist. 6 for $55.60. Vol. Z, p. 260-61, on Feb. 12, 1879, J.W. Meredith sold to F.M. Sims for $1100. land previously purchased by John Lisk from G.G. Dibrell. In Deed records Vol. 31, p. 426 on May 29, 1889, James W. Meredith buys all 1/10th of C.D. Tracey's interest in the estate of mother Ann Tracey for $700. It includes the first house lot in Sparta, fronting the public square, and 435 acres in all. In Vol. 9 of Civil and Criminal Minutes, p. 218, October, 1875, the Grand Jury presented charges of "Prowling in disguise" to James Merideth Jr., Vance Carrick, D.C. Lowry, J.A. Dibrell, Van Fisk. Also D.C. Lowry, James Dibrell were charged with carrying pistols, and Will Snodgrass with "disturbing public worship." p. 300, July 1876, the State attorney general dropped the chargeof "prowling in disguise" against James Meredith. I bet that Ed Meredith's contempt of court charge was from his appearance in court on the day that James was appearing for the prowling charge. In 1875, James M. Merideth is listed with 403 acres in Dist. 6. This is where he stays till his death. He is in the same district as John Crook, so I assume this is the Old Zion community. The last tax list I have found is for 1896, and he is still on this land in Dist. 6, although he has sold parcels and owns a total of 195 acres worth $1000. James Meredith's middle name would be nice! It is mostly shown as what appears to be a W, but occasionally looks like an M. In the 1875 "prowling" charge, he is listed as "Jr." This would seem that his father's full name would be James Martin Meredith, and the father went by Martin. After J.W. Meredith died, on December 29, 1900, a public sale of his effects were made, recorded on page 249, Vol. 1, of the Inventory Books, FHL #507883. His belongings consisted of a 2 horse Jersey, 65 bushells corn, tolls, plows, rifle, ect. Purchasers include A.J. Beavers, and Jernigans. I am not sure who his land went to, although I assume his minor children. More About JAMES W. Hardcastle as a Private in Jas. H. Snodgrass' Company of the 25th Rigiment Tennessee Infantry and was 21 years old at the muster-in roll of Oct. 1, 1861 at Camp Myers. He is present for duty in Company A. In the muster roll for Sept. and Oct. 1862 it says he was paid by M.C. Dibrell on August 31 and is shown as a 2nd Sergeant as early as June 30, 1862. He is present on all muster rolls in 1863 and paid last by Capt. Dibrell on Sept. 1, 1863. On muster roll dated Nov. and Dec. 1863 it says deserted Dec. 3, 1863 at Knoxville, TN. stopages for los of ordnance 1 canteen and strap 26 cents. Then on April 7, 1864 muster near Zollicoffer, TN. says deserted Dec. 3, 1863 and joined the 8th Tenn. Cavalry. There is a Confederate Pension #1081, 25th Infantry. Pension Application for William H. Meredith, native of White Co. Tennesee, born 1840. Application dated Aug. 23, 1892. Stated he enlisted in Co. A, of 25th Tennessee under Col. Sydney Stanton. (As did Jonathan Scott and W.R. Hill) When captured was in Co. D, under Jefferson Leftwitch captain, G.G. Dibrell Col. States that on the 15th of Feb. 186-? was captured and confined at Fort Delaware for 12 months where he was badly frost bitten in both legs. He has lost almost the entire use of both legs. He was paroled about 1 month before the surrender and "stayed in Richmon and Rolley N. C. until the surrender." Says he is married, wife is 45, two children, 7 and 3, both boys, tries to work as a carpenter, owns no land. Doctor verification is by S.H. Snodgrass, Witness is William E. Austin and L. Lowry, and Hill and Mitchell of Sparta are the Attorneys looking after this application. (Not sure when he was captured. Is it Feb. 1864? That would fit with being in the prison for 12 months and being paroled just before surrender.February, 1864 would make more sense.) In Vol. 9 of Civil and Criminal Minutes, p. 318, 321, William Meredith is charged with "prowling in disquise" in Oct. 1876. He agrees to pay a fine of $500., and was secured by Henry C. Snodgrass and J.A. Dibrell. In 1880 census, 13th Dist. White Co. p. 499, Will Merideth (34) is shown living as a widowed son-in-law to Margaret Brown, 54, with a granddaughter Martha Meredith 17, and David Meredith 8. He is a carpenter and maimed. He stays living there it seems, from 1871 to 1884, always appearing on the tax lists as paying his poll tax, but not owning land. When he marries Kitty Hudgens Fisk in 1885 his name disappears from the tax rolls. In 1888, Kitty Meredith appears owning 175 acres in Dist. 1, next to Dibrell, Brown, Jarvis, and Gracy. She continues to show up through 1895. Land Records: Vol. 43, p. 534. On July 5, 1899 the Fisk heirs sold 3 acres of land to W.H. Meredith for $15. Then on Oct. 31, 1903 (Vol. 43, p. 537) W.H. Meredith sold the same 3 acres for $50. to D.A. Wiggins. In 1903, the Tennessee Legislature ordered an audit to see if all pensioners should still be on the rolls, and a second document to #1081 was sworn to on June 29th, 1903 to W.L. Dibrell, County Clerk that he owned nothing but 3 acres, valued at $50. He has no wife and no family living with him. He says here that he was paroled at Washington, Georgia in May, 1865 and he did not take an oath of allegiance to the U.S. government. In Vol. 12 of Civil and Criminal Minutes, p. 547, Bill Meredith is charged by State of TN with carrying a pistol. There is a court case between W.H. Meredith vs. Bon Air Coal in Vol. 18 of the White Co. Minute Book Civil and Criminal Record. Page 147, 209, and it ends with an out-of-court settlement. Bon Air Coal then countersues and the record on p. 20, dated May 6, 1904, Plantiff dismisses suit and pays court costs. This must be the court case that Jeff Dibrell was so upset about, mentioned under Daniel Martin Meredith. There is a W.H. Meredith buried in the Winchester City Cemetery next to Elisha Meredith, Elisha's wife Hannah, and their son John Meredith. There is nothing to indicate if this is our W. H. Meredith because there are no dates on the headstone, yet there are no other W.H. Merediths in this area and he has no known burial in Sparta. The fact that W.H. named his son Daniel Martin, also indicates a possible connection with Daniel McCoy possibly as one of the grandfathers, the other being Martin Meredith. This is all speculation. Sevier was killed by Roland H. Hudson, born in Virginia in 1841. (1870 census, White Co. More About SEVIER EVANS and AMANDA MEREDITH: Marriage: October 10, 1874, White Co., Tenn. Notes for WILLIAM RANSOM HILL: William R. Hill, age 19, joined the Confederate Army on July 26, 1861. He was recruited in Cave (near present day Doyle), White Co. and became a member of Company C, of the 25th Infantry and was ranked a Sergeant. A reorganization took place in May, 1862 and Lt. Col. George C. Dibrell was not reelected, so Dibrell organized the 13th (8th) Cavalry Regiment and W.R. Hill transferred to this unit on May 10 1862. The 13th is also called the 8th as well as Gore's Cavalry. Source: Tennesseans in the Civil War. Archival Records: Two records state he was Enlisted by Lt. A. B. Hardcastle on July 26, 1861 for 12 months in White Co. as a Sgt. in Co. C, 25 Reg't Tennessee Infantry. This was organized for State service on Aug. 10, 1861, and transferred to the service of the Confederate states on October 1, 1861. On October 1 muster-in roll he is shown as present, 19 years old, and Sgt. in Capt. Wm. G. Smith's Company of the 25 Regiment Tennessee Infantry. Another record for a company muster roll dated April 7, 1864 near Zollicoffer, E. Tenn. agrees he joined July 26, 1861 at Cave Hill, Tenn. by Col. S.S. Stanton. This record also states that he transferred to 8 Tenn. Cavalry on May 10, 1862. On the company Muster Roll for the 13th Cavalry, W.R. Hill is serving as 2nd Lt. of Co. D, 8 Reg't Tennessee Cavalry. This regiment was organized as Partisan Rangers in September 1862, and consolidated into 10 companies. He was enlisted by Col. Dibrell in Sparta, Tenn. on Aug. 2, 1862. It states that he served as a 2nd Lieutenant for Co. D, 13th enlisted by Col. Dibrell, enlisting on Aug. 2, 1862 and on the Muster Roll from June 30 to Dec. 31 in 1864. Family history calls him Captain, and on the last muster roll it says he was "Commanding the Company" although he is still listed as a 2nd Lt. When Col. Dibrell was promoted to Brigadier General in July 1864, Capt. Leftwich, leader of Co. D, was usually in command of the regiment after Lt. Col. Dougherty was taken prisoner. So even though the Archives do not reflect a formal promotion, it must have taken place. The chaos of the last year of the war for the Confederacy meant that many records were not kept. Another source is Amanda Hill's Pension Application #51979 filed in Hunt Co., Texas. That can be found in the book Johnny Rebs of Hunt Co. Texas p. 47, compiled by Frances Terry Ingmire, 1977, as well as the archival record from the State of Texas. His son's family history stated his date of birth as Nov. 8, however his tombstone says Nov. 9. In 1870 W.R. Hill was the Tax Collector for the Railroad, filed the taxes in April 1875, p. 43-44 of Vol. 26 of County Court Minute Book. On p. 77 of same book, in Sept. 1875, W.R. Hill resigns his office as overseer of the Road, and Wm. Anderson was appointed to take over that position. Tax Records: 1875-1886 White Co. Tax Books FHL #507970--Wm. R. Hill, living in Dist. 1. In 1875 owns no land. In 1876, he owns 100 acres, with a value of $750. This land borders Mat Anderson, H.A. Doyle, the Calf Killer River, and Wm. Anderson. In 1883 this same land is listed as belonging to W.R. Hill's heirs. I assume this is land that came from Mary Anderson. It is during this time that Amanda Meredith Evans Hill's inheritance from her marriage to Sevier is being finalized. The land is put up for sale and W.R. Hill buys 365 acres of it. So now he owns two parcels of land in Dist. 1. Land records: In Book W, p. 421 W.R. Hill on March 17, 1877 sold the mineral rights to G. M. Colbert for 100 acres on the Calf Killer tributary of Caney Fork of the Cumberland River. He would be paid $10. a year for the right to search for oil, coal, etc. That same year Elizabeth H. Hill signed a mining contract with the same party for her 106 acres. Notes for DAVID CROCKETT LOWERY: Note: This last name is spelled Lowry, Lowery, and Lowrey in various records. "David C. Lowrey, a well known and enterprising planter of White County, and resident of the first civil district is a native of this county, and was born January 24, 1850. He is the son of Charles and Kittie (Hudgens) Lowrey, both natives of White County. Mr. Lowrey's father was of Irish descent and was born in 1820, and died in 1883, in the county that gave him birth. He was married in 1844, and was engaged in agricultural pursuits, to which he associated the raising and trading in live stock. He made life a good success, was an old line Whig before the war, and a Democrat after the war. Mr. Lowrey's mother's ancestors came from France. She was born in 1826, and is still living a resident of White County. The Lowreys originally came from Pennsylvania, and Mr. Lowrey's ancestors on his mother's side came from Kentucky. His great-grandmother on his mother's side was a niece of Daniel Boone. Our subject is the third of five children. He was educated at the Sparta Seminary and Burrett College, Van Buren County. He has been a merchant, a trader and a planter, and has been successful in them all. In 1867 he settled with his father on the farm where he now lives. Being a live enterprising man all of his life, he has secured a fair competency of this world's goods, and owns a farm of 625 acres in White County. On January 18, 1877, he was married to Miss Maggie Meredith, born in Texas in 1858, though raised in White County. Unto this union are born three children -- two sons and one daughter. Mr. Lowrey is a stanch Democrat, and always supports that party. He is not a church member, but a firm believer in the Bible, and is in sympathy with the Christian Church. His wife is a deserving member of the Christian Church." Source: Goodspeed Biographies of White County More About DAVID CROCKETT LOWERY: Burial: Swift-Hudgens cemetery at Bear Cove, Tenn.
