Notes for PETER BISHOP: All sons of Peter and brother John are speculation only. I have not researched these people enough to know connections. In Clark County in 1830 there are no Bishops. In 1840 there are four families: Henry Bishop household with 8 individuals, John Bishop Sr. with 5, John Bishop Sr. with 6, and Peter Sr. with 10 people. In 1850 in Martinsville there is Margaret Bishop, 50, on own land (Lydia Margaret? widow of John?), next to John, age 46, and wife Matilda, next to John, age 26, and wife Mary (Yager). Also in Martinsville is Henry, age 27, on own land, and Jane Bishop (widow of Peter), age 65, living with Mahala, age 35, and Samuel Cook family. In Auburn, in Clark Co., is Samuel Bishop, age 45. Children of PETER BISHOP and JANE are: 6. i. JOHN WILLIAM3 BISHOP, b. Abt. 1804, Virginia. 7. ii. SAMUEL BISHOP, b. Bet. 1805 - 1810, Virginia. 8. iii. HENRY BISHOP, b. Abt. 1813, Virginia. 9. iv. Notes for GRANVILLE HENDERSON BISHOP: [Betty.FTW] Granville Henderson Bishop1,2 was born on May 17, 1828 in Scott Co, VA.3 ,4 Below is an age study for Granville. The older he gets, the more exagerated the age becomes. The 1840 census in the household of hisp arents, he is listed as 10-15 years old. I think the 1850 census is the m ost accurate of all sources listing him as born in 1828. At 22 years ol d, Elizabeth is in good memory and no reason to give innaccurate age. He married MARY ELIZABETH YAGER September 20, 1846 in Shelby Co., Indiana (Source: Marriage Records 1822-1952 Shelby Co., Indiana, Vol. 6, p. 19, Marriage license granted on Sept. 18, 1846 to John Bishop and Mary Elizabeth Yager. No other information here.). She was born 1830 in Indiana or Kentucky. Notes for JOHN BISHOP: Although John says he was 40 in the 1860 census, I am using the 1850 date as probably more accurate. John owned property in 1850 in Martinsville, but must have sold it by 1860. In 1850 they are not marked as illiterate, but in the 1860 census the parents are marked illiterate. Eliza Jane says her parents are from Virginia in 1880 census, and then in 1900 says they are from Indiana. I cannot find these parents anywhere after 1860, and I cannot find Eliza Jane anywhere in 1870, nor George F. It seems their parents died before 1870 and the children were scattered to different places. I found William and John S. in Indiana, Decatur Co., Forest Hill P.O. living with the family of James George. Notes for MARY ELIZABETH YAGER: Her last name is spelled Yager on her marriage certificate. It is spelled Yeager on George F. Bishop's (her brother) marriage certificate. Her likely family is father John Yeager and mother Nancy A. both born in Kentucky and living in Union Twn., Shelby Co., in 1850 on land valued 1700. I have no proof of direct connection yet, but living with that family is Elisabeth Guess, age 90, from VA. In 1860 Nancy A. Yager 52 is still alive with Elizabeth Gess 96- living in the same place on land valued 4800. John, her husband, has died. In the 1870 census, Nancy A. Dadd 63 is living on that land valued now at $4500. with sons William H. Yager 21 and Joseph A.R. 16. Did she get married and widowed again in the interim 10 years, or did she revert to her maiden name? In the 1840 census, John Yager appears in Union twn. census with a wife younger than himself. I think Nancy A. must have been a second wife. Notes for ELIZABETH JANE BISHOP: From an article in the local newspaper dated Oct. 13, 1933 under title "Storm Leads to Death" : "The death of Mrs. Eliza Jane Weiland, aged wife of John Weiland, farmer living at Brin Swithch, was attributed to the storm. Mrs. Weiland, who had been a sufferer from heart disease for some time, became frightened at the threatening appearance of the clouds and the high winds. She walked some distance to a neighbor's storm house and then back again after the storm had subsided, and this exertion, together with the excitement was the direct cause of her death, according to her physician, Dr. E. D. Lan of this city." More About ELIZABETH JANE BISHOP: Burial: Wieland lot in Oakland Memorial Park in Terrell, Texas Census: 1880, Living with sister Lydia M. Living with sister Lydia and her married family. John L. 45, farmer, b. in Ohio.Angeline 10, Illinois, Ashbury 6, Ill.) Notes for JOHN ADAM WIELAND II: John Adam and his large family moved to Texas in 1907. They came to Kaufman County and settled in the Brin Switch community--a large land holding named after the Brin family. They began as tenant farmers growing cotton. Brin Switch was named for the railroad switch located there. It is five miles north of Terrell, Texas on Hwy. 34. No one knows why they decided to leave all their families and start anew in Texas, except the weather would possibly be kinder. Ida stayed behind for awhile, because we have a postcard from her from Illinois, and she was living in Indianapolis in 1910, working as a house servant. Memories about John Adam from his granddaughter Helen Troy: He was never sick, up to the day he died. In his last few years he lived with his son, Charles Franklin and family. On the day he died, he woke up that morning and said he didn't feel like breakfast and would go lay down. The doctor was called and said he would not make it through the day. His son and son's wife sat with him all day as he drifted away. Around 8 p.m. he sat upright and declared that he was going now, waved goodbye and died right then. From an article in the Daily-Tribune of Dec. 28, 1942: "John A. Wieland Farmer of Tona Dies Suddenly. Had Been Resident Kaufman County Since 1907. J. A. Wieland passed away at the home of his son, Charley Wieland in the Brin Switch community at 8 o'clock Sunday night. While he had been confined to his home for some time, he was feelling as well as usual Sunday morning when he became ill, passing away at the above hour. The body was removed to Anderson-Clayton Bros. funeral home where it will remain until the funeral hour. The service is to be held in the chapel at 4:30 Wednesday afternoon with Ira B. Sandusky, minister of the Church of Christ, and Dr. T. J. Doss, pastor of the first Baptist church conducting the service. Interment will be made in Oakland Memorial Park. John A. Wieland was a native of Sandusky, Ohio, born February 22, 1857. He married Miss Jane Bishop on July 12, 1880 to which union nine children were born, two of whom together with his wife, preceded him in death. Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. R. J. Price of Athens, Mrs. Helen Askew of Dallas, Miss Annie Wieland of Washington D. C., four sons, T.E. Wieland and C.F. Wieland, all of Terrell, C. H. Wieland of Dallas, six grandchildren, one brother, Fred Wieland of Kansas, Illinois. The Wielands came to Texas and to Kaufman county in 1907. With the exception of three years spent on the James O. Conner farm, west of the city, they lived in the Brin Switch community. He had spent his life as a farmer and was recognized as one of the leading farmers of the county for thirty years, having retired only a few years ago. Active pallbearers; T.W. Stutts, B.J. Love, R.L. Clowers, Sam Slayton, Luke Brooks." More About JOHN ADAM WIELAND II: Name 2: Johannes Wieland (Source: Wuerttemberg Emigration Index, #555959.) Notes for ANNA LAURA WIELAND: My memory of "Nanna" as a small girl (1950s) was when she and C. E. had a chicken farm outside of Kaufman. We would go there on a weekend and "Nanna" would grab a chicken by the neck, wring it, and we would have a fried chicken dinner. I also remember getting to gather eggs and running them through the special machine that cleaned them and separated them by weight. Nanna always said that after one of our visits to the hen house they wouldn't lay for a week. I also remember when they got indoor plumbing-what a treat-and that no one would ever go into the living room with the formal furniture. It smelled so fresh in the country.
