Researching the Hamilton and Swan lines which include -

HAMILTON (from Scotland 1844) - KURZ(from Prussia to Gilston 1883), SPINAZE (from Italy 1881), HINZE (from Germany 1881), MARSHALL (from Devon 1856), CAPELIN (from Italy 1881), ORTH (from Prussia 1883) and LUDKE (from Germany 1881)

SWAN (from Scotland in 1883) - SKAU(from Denmark 1871) , FOOTITT (from London 1874), ROBINSON (from Yorkshire 1873), FALCONER (Scotland), HORAN (from London , 1874), SONDERGAARD (from Denmark 1872) and THEOBALD (from Hertford, 1874) - and with family links to New Zealand and Ontario, Canada.

  • The AUSTRALIAN connection - our FIRST AUSTRALIAN (29 KB)
    James Hamilton b 1848 Seaham, NSW, pictured at Carcoar, NSW where he died in 1931. He was the son of James and Margaret (nee Lewis)who came to Australia from SCOTLAND in 1844.
  • The NZ connection - Peter and Isabella SWAN (33 KB)
    Peter and Isabella SWAN (pictured with their grandsons, Peter and William Eskdale) migrated to NZ in 1858. They went there to join their eldest daughter, Isabella (Eskdale), and their son, Adam and took with them their four other daughters. Only one member of the family, John Swan, remained in Scotland. His son, Peter (see next photo), migrated to Australia in 1883.
  • The SCOTTISH connection - Peter SWAN (62 KB)
    Peter SWAN, grandson of Peter and Isabella SWAN, who came to Australia (Qld) by himself in 1883.
  • The ITALIAN connection - the SPINAZE family (44 KB)
    Giovanni and Maria SPINAZE (nee CAPELIN) with six of their children. Giovanni and Maria were both members of the group of Italians who were seeking a better life in New Ireland but were conned by the Marquis de Ray. Giovanni's first wife and young child died before reaching Australia and Giovanni remarried Maria in Sydney in 1885.
  • One GERMAN connection - HINZE/LUDKE family (51 KB)
    Carl HINZE, his wife Johanna(nee LUDKE) and their family pictured in 1900.
  • An ENGLISH (Devon) connection - William MARSHALL (17 KB)
    William MARSHALL and his wife, Jane (nee PERRYMAN) came to Australia in 1856 and settled in Emmaville in the New England area of NSW.
  • An ENGLISH (Nottinghamshire) connection - FOOTITT (9 KB)
    Thomas FOOTITT who came to Australia with his wife, Martha (HORAN), and their three children in 1874. They appear to have followed Martha's parents who seem to have come in the 1860s.
  • The DANISH connection - SKAU (13 KB)
    Fritz SKAU (son of Freidrich SKAU and Christina SONDERGAARD) his wife, Hannah ROBINSON, and their family. Friedrich SKAU came to Aust in 1871 and Christina SONDERGAARD followed the next year.
  • An ENGLISH (Yorkshire/ Hertfordshire) connection (22 KB)
    This is probably Samuel ROBINSON (b Yorkshire 1850) and Hannah (b THEOBALDS, m HUMPHREY then widowed) with their son Frederick, daughter Florence and Hannah's daughter, Rosina HUMPHREY.
  • The CANADIAN connection (27 KB)
    A barn on the Forbes farm in Dummer, Ontario, Canada where George Forbes (son of Mary McFee and George Forbes) and Jane Darling settled about 1861.
