In same unit was his cousin Thomas Alexander Thornton, who also ended up in Colorado. *have copy of book for this regiment* -05 - 07 May 1864 he fought in Battle at Wilderness, VA -08 - 12 May 1864 he was fighting in Battle at Spottsylvania, VA and was captured 10 May 1864. He was then taken to Andersonville, GA. On the 24th of May there were 30,000 men incarcerated there on about 16 acres of land of which 2 of that was swamp. This equals out to about 2,000 men per acre. Deaths were about 70 a day. There were no reported hurricanes during this incarceration. In September 1864 all those persons healthy enough were placed on transport an moved to Florence, SC, about 100 miles north of Charleston. This prison was 10 acres and had about 15,000 men. Sometime during his incarceration he fractured his right leg and also developed scurvy. In December of 1864 the sick and most needy were sent to Charleston. Once there, placed on transport and steamed out of harbor. Just past Fort Sumter exchanged. Landed at Annapolis, MD. -He was paroled 06 Dec 1864 at Charleston, SC and reported to Hospital DW2 on 05 Dec 1864. -On 23 Dec 1864 he was furnished transportation on furlough from Annapolis, MD to Columbus, OH. -Admitted to hospital 22 Jan 1865 -He was discharged 31 June 1865 at Annapolis, MD. -In papers there is note regarding Land case 31 March 1871(could this be for him and Belle?) -He then married and had a son Gavin who was born in PA about 1872. -His wife Belle (unk maiden name) then died in June of 1873 and is buried in an unmarked grave at Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage, PA. - -*1880 there is a 34 year old male (living with McGovern brothers) in Kansas - -in Columbia, Ouray Co.,Colorado (Gaom Brownlee) believe this is him more so than the one from Kansas as this county is near where he bought land in months before census was taken* -In February of 1880 and May of 1880 he is shown in the deed books of Custer County, Colorado. -03 September 1882 he married again in Oak Creek, Fremont County, CO to Margaret Cowan Westwater. She ran a boarding house in Coal Creek, CO. She lived with him for sometime but was not happy and didn't stay very long. When Gavin died she changed her name back to Westwater. and his property became known as "the Old Westwater Ranch". It is located on a flat above the old school at Hillside, CO. Again he is shown in deed books. They had a daughter named "Lizzie". -June 1888 in deed books shows him selling land to a David Cowan (brother-in-law?) -On 11 September 1889 they dedicated the monument at Gettysburg to his unit from service in Civil War. A photo was taken, it is unknown if he attended this. -He filed for pension in Sept 1890 and shows address as Silver Cliff, CO.
