Memorial service for Private Erwin Mittelstetter were held at the Ev. Zions Church yesterday.  For these many months since November the parents of this young soldier have lived in hopes that the news may come of his being alive but such was not their good fortune.  The government at first reported the young man missing in action and later that he had been killed in action.  This last report has been verified by eye-witnesses and he is now sleeping his last sleep under the sod of France.  This is the only Millstadt boy who made the supreme sacrifice by giving up his life in actual battle.

Erwin Philip Mittelstetter was born in Millstadt on September 15, 1894.  His parents are Philip and Bertha (Mueller) Mittelstetter.  He was drafted into the army on February 27, 1918 and was stationed in Co. K 335 Infantry at Camp Taylor.  On September 3, 1918 he left for France.  He met death on the battle front November 7, 1918 aged 24 years, 1 month and 23 days.

He leaves his parents and the following brothers and sisters:  Walter, Alfred, Luetta and Elenora.  He also leaves his aged grandmother Catherine M. Mueller to mourn his loss as well as a host of relatives and friends.

Services were conducted by Rev. Paul Wendt in his honor and many friends and relatives were present.
