====BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES ON Katharina Heller VEITH=====

Katharina (Heller) VEITH is the tenth and youngest child of Valentin HELLER and Rosine (Silber) HELLER, who was born 25 May 1869 in Neckarelz, Baden, Germany. She is Carla Michele HELLER's great-grand aunt.

When Katharina was almost 27 years of age, she was married on 21 Jan 1896 to August VEITH of the nearby community of Neckargerach. The couple was married in Katharina's home village (Neckarelz), and then August apparently returned to Neckargerach with his bride to establish a home there.

Nearly 2 years after their marriage, August and Katharina produced a son, Johann Josef VEITH, born 9 November 1897 in Neckargerach.

Regrettably, no more children were produced in this marriage, as August VEITH died about two and a half weeks after his only son was born. He passed away in the region of the Rhein (exact location pending further research) on 28 November 1897, leaving Katharina a widow with an infant only a few weeks old.

The widowed Katharina (Heller) VEITH remarried to another member of the VEITH family a little over a year following August's death. She married Wilhelm, son of Sebastian and Josefine (Senftleber) VEITH of Neckargerach, on 1 December 1898. (Wilhelm and August were both 3rd and 5th cousins by blood, and related by various degrees by marriage.) Born 24 September 1875, Wilhelm was almost 6 years younger than his late relative, August.

It is documented that Wilhelm and Katharina together produced at least a daughter, Rosa Josefine VEITH, born 24 September 1899. Notations in Rosa's baptismal record by the officiating priest indicate she emigrated to Chicago, USA, where she married Max RANFT on 26 November 1925 at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in that city. (Max is noted as having been Protestant by the Neckargerach parish priest.) This fact was confirmed by obtaining a copy of the marriage license from the Cook County (IL) Clerk, #1092857. It was determined from the Social Security Death Index that Rosa VEITH RANFT died at the age of 92 on 8 APR 1992 in Park Ridge (a suburb of Chicago) IL. She and Max RANFT reportedly had children and grandchildren, who are still living in the Chicago area. A possible descendant, Max RANFT, is shown to be living at 930 S. Lincoln Avenue, Park Ridge, IL 60068-4513, telephone (847) 823-4599 (taken from Internet site SWITCHBOARD on 24 APR 1998).

NOTE: The surname VEITH is shown variously spelled in the German parish registers as VEITH and VEIT. The final "h" is silent, so the difference in spelling may be a matter of phonetic rendering.

Notes for A
UGUST (MARTIN&SUS) VEITH:
Excerpt of email from Kate Ranft Wetzel on 4 March 2001:

August operated a barge on the Neckar. He drowned, and Katharina married Wilhelm to keep the barge in the family. I seem to remember hearing something of this from Friedl, too.

Note by cmh: This information is corroborated by the notes in the church record entry from Neckargerach's Catholic church.
