Notes for K
ARL-HEINRICH HELLER:
Karl Heinrich Heller's christening information was discovered (and his known birthdate confirmed) in the microfilms of the Catholic church records for his birthplace, which were filmed by the LDS Family History Library. (It was originally believed that the German Heller family were actually practicing Lutherans; however, Karl Heinrich evidently took up that faith only in adulthood, and was Catholic in his childhood.)

The search was undertaken in approximately 1993, after consulting with Karl Heinrich's youngest surviving son, Lennart Heller, who was able to supply the name of his father's birthplace: Diedesheim, Baden, Germany. Microfilm # 1,049,358 of the LDS collection contains the Catholic church records (kirchenbücher) for this locality. The LDS filmed the records in the Catholic Archbishop's Archives in Freiburg, Germany, in February, 1976. Because this information was extracted and "temple rites performed" for the Hellers by the LDS, their extracted information appears on the International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Germany, where Karl Heinrich's granddaughter, Carla Heller, initially located the information, subsequently ordering the microfilm itself for an extensive review.

From the IGI and microfilm, it was learned that Karl Heinrich had a brother, Richard Heller, whose birth (01 January 1878) preceded Karl Heinrich's own (19 November 1878) by only 10 months. Both boys were born and christened in Diedesheim, though their father, Heinrich Heller, is identified as a butcher by occupation who actually resided in the nearby village of Neckarelz. Both locations are historically shown to have small populations of less than 1500 inhabitants circa 1871-1919 (Diedesheim is smallest, with 819 residents, vs. Neckarelz' 1457.) The next larger location is Mosbach (the kreis, or "county" in which Neckarelz was situated) which had characteristics and facilities one would find in a "town", which the former two lacked. Interestingly, all three places had their own independent "Standesamt," or civil registry office.

Research has disclosed that Karl Heinrich's christening was officially witnessed by his godparents: Franz Karl Baugard and his "ehefrau" (legitimate wife), Maria Lohrmiller Baugard, both of Diedesheim. Baugard is referred to by his full name in his marriage record, but is called only "Karl" in the record of Karl Heinrich Heller's christening. This may represent the emergence of the now much-repeated name of "Karl" (and its variations) in the Heller descendants (including the historian, Carla). Perhaps Baugard was a close friend of Heinrich Heller's, whom the latter chose to honor by naming one of his sons after him. (It is worth noting that Heinrich's firstborn son was christened "Richard", and that Heinrich's own name was not passed down until his second son's birth. "Richard" may simply have been a name the parents favored, or it may be that a male relative on either the Heller or Hagner sides of Karl Heinrich's family was so named.) Franz Karl Baugard's occupation is understood to be that of a bridge-worker, as noted in the text ("bruckenarbeiter").
