"Hy Ampsul Smith, son of Elijah and Emily Smith was born near Shelbyville, IL., October 14, 1849 and departed this life at the home of his son, Wilber E. In 1852 he came with his parents to Marion county, Iowa, where they established a home and Mr. Smith grew to manhood. On October 19, 1876, he was married to Miss Lydia E. Batten, who died July 3, 1911, leaving Mr. Smith to mourn the loss of a devoted companion. In 1877 they moved to Madison county, Iowa, and erected a home that exemplified the true Christian spirit to all. To this union was born eight sons and two daughters...Thirty four years ago brother Smith was converted and became a member of the Church of Christ at Kasson, Iowa and was a firm believer in the Christian faith until he was called to his reward. In his passing another sturdy pioneer has written upon the table of time, the qualities that are required to uphold the respect of all humanity; honesty of purpose, purity of soul and the golden rule 'Love thy neighbor as thyself'..."
