Notes for CHRISTENA E. BENTLEY:
At the age of eleven, Christena was sent by her father to live with another family and work as their housekeeper to earn money to help support the family. During her teenage years she worked at a hotel in Perry where she polished her cooking skills and learned to make what today is known as potatoe chips. She must have become an excellent cook because it was said that no one could make parker house rolls as good as her. In her last years her eyesight began to fail to the point of near blindness and her granddaughter Dolores helped care for her. Her obituary states she was "possessed with great courage, which brought her through many a heartache and trial".

" William E. Bentley, 80, long time resident of Perry, died about 3 a.m. Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herman Schluter, northeast of Bouton. Mr. Bentley's home in Perry was at 1204 North St. For many years until his retirement he was employed at the Atlas Washer Co., the Globe Manufacturing Co. and the Osmundson Spade Manufacturing Co. in Perry. Services for Mr. Bentley will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Workman-Timeon Funeral Home. Mrs. Ray Wilcox will be the reader. Burial will be at Violet Hill cemetery. Mr. Bentley's body will lie in state at the funeral home until the time of the services. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, in Perry. The son of William E. and Fanny R. Bentley, he was born June 22, 1876 at Perlee, Ia. near Fairfield. He married Daisy Clergy of Perry in Des Moines on June 26, 1907. His wife preceded him in death. The couple resided in Valley Junction and Grimes before coming to Perry in 1909. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Herman (Beulah) Schluter, of near Bouton; one brother, Reuben Bentley of Lyons, Kan., and three sisters, Mrs. George Alywood and Mrs. Frank Reynolds of Perry and Mrs. Ellen Hegwood of Paton, Ia. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and one brother." (Obituary, 6 Feb 1957)

"Death came at 9:45 this morning to Mrs. W.E. Bentley, who was 63 years old, had been gradually failing in health since suffering a stroke last fall. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Workman Funeral home, with the Christian Science church ritual. Burial will be in Violet Hill cemetery. The body lies in state at the funeral home. Mrs. Bentley, the former Daisy Clergy, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Amos Clergy, was born March 15, 1883 on a farm north of Perry. On June 26, 1907 she was married to W.E. Bentley at Des Moines. They lived at Valley Junction, then at Grimes and moved to Perry in 1909, their home since. Besides her husband, Mrs. Bentley is survived by a daughter, Miss Beulah Bentley, at home; three sisters, Mrs. E.J. Thompson of Minneapolis, Mrs. Lena Steinhauser of St. Paul and Mrs. E. Hickey of Dubuque; two brothers, Frank Clergy of Perry and Henry of St. Louis. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters."
