On 12-2-1843, PBB 22, Lydia Richey, David W. Richey and Henry Richey produce will of Dec'd. in which they are named as executors and will is proved by James M. Applegate and Richard Phegley. Letters Testamentary are granted executors. Security: James M. Applegate and Richard Phegley.

"In the name of God Amen, I Joseph Richey of the County of Scott and State of Indiana being weak in body but possessing a sound mind and wishing to sell my worldly concerns while I am in my right mind of all my estate wherewith the Lord hath helped me with. First of all I commend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the grave to be buried in a.....Christ like burial and after my departure first to make payment of all my just debts and after that is done I will and bequeath my earthly estate as follows to wit. First I will and bequeath all my property both real and personal to my beloved wife Lydia Richey to be at her own disposal during her natural life or so as she remains my widow. 2nd I have heretofore during the life of my eldest daughter Polly I have given her property to the amount of seventy one dollars.....and to my son David Richey my eldest son I have given him property heretofore to the amount of fifty eight dollars thirty seven and half cents and I have heretofore and do now give and bequeath to my second son Henry C. Richey an sorrel mare worth fourty dollars and to my son James M. Richey I now give and bequeath to him an Bay mare worth twenty dollars and to my two single daughters who are now at home Fanny Richey and Susan Richey are two heirs that I have not given or bequeathed any of my property but I have that with my beloved wife to give to them of such as she can spare to the amount of their sister Polly my oldest daughter and also my three sons, David W., Henry C. and James M. Richey to have of property such as my wife can spare to make them equal in amount with their sister Polly my oldest daughter and after the death or widowhood of my beloved wife my real estate and personal property that remains is to be sold and the money equally divided between my children and my two grandchildren James T. Phegley and Eliza Ann Phegley and.....their mother.....of money from my estate which is one sixth part of my estate or should they think best they may divide the real estate and my personal equally among themselves and for the.....carrying this my last will and testament in.....I hereby ordain and.....my beloved wife Lydia Richey together with my two sons David W. Richey and Henry C. Richey to be the executrix and executors of this my last will and testament to execute the same agreeable to the.....intent and meaning of this my last will and testament and for to see that my estate both real and personal shall be wise taken care of so that is not to be wasted in any way or.....whatever. In testimony whereof I Joseph Richey the forgoing Testator doth set my hand and seal this 1st day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fourty three. Catherine Richey and Josiah McGuire appointed admrs. Security: James M. Applegate and William Richey.

"In the name of God Amen, I Abraham Richey of the County of Scott and State of Indiana being of sound mind and memory.....ability and calling to mind the uncertainty of life and certainty of death have thought proper to make this my last will and Testament hereby making a division of the property both real and personal that I am possessed of at this time. Direct 1st In order to execute and carry out my wishes as in this my last will and Testament.....particularly expenses as set forth. I do ordain and appoint my beloved wife Catherine Richey together with Josiah McGuire my lawful executrix and executor to be governed as herein after directed. Item !st, I direct that my body be decently interred. 2nd I direct all my just debts to be adjusted and paid. 3rd I direct that all my property both real and personal shall be and remain in the.....possession of my beloved wife Catherine so long as she may live or remain my lawful widow and after.....equally divided among my younger heirs. That is Elizabeth Gray, Nancy Richey, Sarah Ann Richey, Eliza Richey and Adeline Richey. 4th I direct that my oldest son John Richey be allowed five dollars out of my estate. I order and direct that my son Abraham Richey Jr. be allowed five dollars out of my estate. I order and direct that my son Thomas Richey be allowed five dollars out of my estate. I order and direct that my son William Richey be allowed five dollars out of my estate. I order and direct that my son Robert Richey be allowed the sum of five dollars to be paid out of my estate. I order and direct that my daughter Phebe McCloud be allowed five dollars to be paid out of my estate and I direct that my aforesaid executrix and executor should select such of my personal property as in their opinion can be best.....out of the family and sell the sum to pay the aforesaid sums of all and to any of my oldest heirs and to defray other necessary expenses. Notes for DR. JOHN RICHEY:
John probably came to Indiana in 1809 with William Elston Collings. "Dr. John Richey and Sichey Collings were the first couple married in Scott Co. in 1810. They lived in the area of the settlement to the southwest. Dr. John was working in the field when he heard shots and saw smoke rising from the homes of the settlement. Realizing what was happening, he took Sichey upon his back and fled through the cornfield. They hid in the woods until dark and then laboriously made their way to Zebulon's blockhouse the following morning. Sichey delivered their first child (Richard) shortly after the massacre." Excerpt from "The Collings, Richeys & the Pigeon Roost Massacre", pg. 758, Sylvia Applegate Richey speaking of her grandmother, Sichey Richey Davis Applegate, daughter of Dr. John & Sichey Richey: "Grandma's mother was a midwife. She had 14 children and raised one grandson. She and Dr. John walked and rode horseback. She did much of the midwife work as he had taught her. He went to medical college in Virginia. Grandma's parents were gone so much, they taught their children how to take over. Half the girls big enough to work would take one part of work one week and the other half the next. They had to keep the pewter dishes and everything shining. One time a lady patient came in with her apron full of love apples (tomatoes). She knew they were good to eat and after that they all ate them." And pg. 759: "Dr. John Richey was one of the founders of Old Ox Baptist Church in 1823 in south Finley Township in Scott County. The Richeys and Applegates attended that church as it was the closest".
