Notes for R
ICHARD BARK FOREMAN:
According to the missionary at Candy's Creek (Rev Holland) in 1828, Bark Foreman had a speech impediment due to a hare-lip. His actual given name was Richard but he was called "Bark" because he was a Conjuror (or Medicine Man). His nephew was also named Richard Foreman.

In 1838 Bark did not emigrate because his white wife (Rachel Seabolt) was ill but he did emigrate later and he is listed on the 1851 Drennen roll.

Ref: Miller ap# 44919 by Thadeus Turk McJunkin;
"The name of my ancestor through whom I claim a right to share in this fund is my grandfather, Bark Foreman, better known as Dr. Bark Foreman, he was an Indian Doctor, and had quite a reputation in Polk and Bradley Counties, Tennessee, and also in other Counties, as a Doctor. He made his own medicine, mostly from herbs, roots and bark. He also wrote a book on medicine, which was used quite extensively through this country for many years, and some of these books are still in this country and could be found if it is necessary."
