Benjamin Hawkins (US Agent to Creek Indians who passed through the Cherokee Nation in 1796) hired two Cherokee interpreters; Sallie Hughes and a half-blood, Mrs Sallie Waters. Sallie Waters' aunt, was the wife of Chief Sour Mush (Ogosata). HAWKINS PAPERS 12/1/1796 (pages 20-21)

Sallie's son, George Morgan Waters, told John Howard Payne a strange story concerning his cousin, James Vann, Vann's uncle, Charles Hughes, and Old Chief Sour Mush, all members of the same Clan.
[In accordance with the Cherokee Matralinial Systen that means that Charles Hughes was the Maternal half-brother of James Vann's mother and aunt Sallie Waters.]

Notes for J
OHN CHEROKEE VANN III:
Moravian Journals, 12/20/1806; refers to Polly Terrapin's husband as having died of Small Pox at Hightower. Presumably, this was John "Cherokee" Vann. His father, John "Trader" Vann, was also a "linguister" (or interpreter).

To confuse the issue more... In 1770 Alexander Cameron appointed John Vann (apparently a white trader) as official interpreter, replacing another white trader, John Watts (deceased). In 1775 another interpreter, Joseph Vann, was involved with the Henderson land sale at Sychamore Shoals acting contrary to the orders of his employer, Alexander Cameron. In 1779 Robert Due (another white trader) wrote to Cameron that a number of white men, including John Vann and Joseph Vann, had joined war parties.

Therefore; there are probably two seperate Vann mixed-blood families descending from their white projenitors, John and Joseph Vann, and their Cherokee wives.

LEMENT VANN:
Letters Received 1824-1880, Office of Indian Affairs (RG75);
In 1829 Clement Vann told General Coffee that he was 83 years old and had been in the Cherokee nation for fifty years. Therefore it is highly unlikely that he could have been the father of the Cherokee Chief, James Vann b 1766, well before Clement Vann entered the Cherokee nation.

In addition, the Moravian Journals consistently referred to James Vann and his mother and her husband, Clement, but they never referred to Clement as James Vann's father.

(notes somewhere in a box in my closet;)
James' sister, Nancy, once mentioned that her father was Joseph Vann.

The date of entry into the Cherokee Nation of Clement, and Nancy's reference to Joseph as her father indicate that Joseph Vann and Clement Vann are two seperate individuals.
