ARAH ROSALIE HICKS:
From a newspaper clipping attached to Miler ap#12686 for grand-niece Maud Hunter nee Williams;
(Name of newspaper not provided) "Death of Mrs S S Stephens" Vinita, Okla., Sept 26, (Special);
"The death here yesterday of Mrs Spencer S Stephens closes the life of a remarkable woman. She was 76 years old and was the youngest child of William and Sarah Hicks; was born in Georgia where her father had a large plantation, and was chief of the Cherokee Indians in 1826 and 1827. She was reared in luxury but left an orphan early in life. She was adopted into the home of Dr Worcester, then missionary to the Cherokee Indians, where she lived until she was married. She was the mother of ten children and had thirty-two grandchildren. She was one of the foremost instructors among the Indians for many years and lived her whole life among them."

PENCER SEAGO STEPHENS:
1906 Miller application #2376; "I am the only child of Malinda Stephens [nee Roach] and Jess Stephens. John Harnage was my guardian after my parents died. He drew my emigrant money in 1851."

My note: Spencer was orphaned as a child and raised by John Griffith Harnage who had married Spencer's aunt Lucy. On the 1851 Drennen roll I find Spencer Stephens in Going Snake District, family# 429, along with a Sarah Williams. Family# 428 is Emily Harnage nee Mayfield and her children by this same John Griffith Harnage, Spencers' foster parents. I don't know who this Sarah Williams is, perhaps another foster child that the Harnages raised.
