By Perry Nelson Hill The Fargo Forum C. B. Hill Dies In Moorhead Charles B. Hill, 90 died Thursday morning in a Moorhead hospital. He resided at 119 Eighth at S. Moorhead. He was born at Brownsville, Mich., May 27, 1853. While he was young his family moved to Cassopolis, Mich., where he attended a country school at Dowagiac, Mich. His first job was on a farm. The father died while the children were young. During the Civil war the widowed mother worked hard to support herself and the children. Worked in a Mill Charles Hill went to work in a flour mill at Silver Creek mills near Dowagiac, but he was forced to give up this occupation because of health. His first visit to Moorhead was in the fall of 1877, when he accompanied a carload of horses from Dowagiac. Liking the country he returned the next April and resided here since. He first worked on the Wilks farm, about 15 miles north of Moorhead on the Buffalo river. He took over this farm as renter and on one occasion had 2,200 acres of wheat, barley, and oats planted, most of which was destroyed in an afternoon's hailstorm. He farmed three years then came to Moorhead and bought a livery barn, located where the L. R. Hartz grocery, 15 Sixth St. N. now stands. During the three years he operated the livery, he also was deputy sheriff under Jorgen Jensen. He also was deputy the following year and in 1890 he was a successful candidate for sheriff and served two terms. He refused a third term, but took the post as bailiff and held it since. Policeman Killed During the time he was deputy sheriff, Tom Brown, a transient youth, killed Policeman Peter Poull of Moorhead after Poull had called him from a dance floor for questioning in Fargo. He was tried and Deputy Hill had custody of him up to the time of his hanging. Hill also recalled as a big trial that of Frank Kethman for the murder of Dr. Egge in Moorhead. In the early days Sheriff Hill was forced to personally notify all jurors of their call for service. Driving with horse and buggy, he required a week to notify a panel. Only last June Hill related a story of a trip, much of it by horse and buggy, to Illinois, Michigan, Boston and Michigan, on the trail of Samuel L. Copland, employed on a dairy farm at the edge of Moorhead, who staged a daring daylight holdup at the Moorhead National bank on June 26, 1893. Scooped up $2,500 The bandit scooped up $2,500 in currency, dashed to the river swam across and hid in a barn, subsequently making his escape. Copland finally was apprehended in Iowa, returned to Moorhead and was sentenced to seven years in Stillwater penitentiary. Hill had many an exciting moment in those early days and loved to sit by the hour and reminisce. He took particular pride in the fact that he had cast a ballot at every presidential election since 1876 and that he voted the Democratic ticket every time but once.
