DDIE FRANKLIN HILL:
The following family history was provided by Helen Louise Hill Lewis:

Once upon a time in Rutherford County, NC, there was born a baby boy to Calvin Lee Hill and Lenora Susan Hardin Hill. This boy was named Addie Franklin Hil and he was born on October 17, 1899 into a family where there was already one child. All the chilren of this family were Stella Hill, Addie Franklin Hill, Daisy Hill, Nellie Hill, Cleree Hill, Jennie Lee Hill and Ernest Hill. This was a musical family. Calvin Lee played the banjo, Frank played the guitar and fiddle and Ernest played the guitar.

Way up in Madison County, NC, there was born on January 22, 1902 a baby girl to John Condrey and Mandy Jane Davis Condrey. Her name was Mary Venetta Condrey. A few years later her mother, Mandy Jane, died and was buried in Madison County at the North Fork Baptist Church cemetery at Big Pine. Later on, John Condrey married Altha Plemmons and there was born three girls to be half-sisters to Mary. They were Clara Condrey, Alma Condrey and Edith Condrey.

Times were hard back then and about the only work was farming and cotton mill work. We don't know how many years passed but both families were destined to meet and work in the cotton mill in Marion, NC. Frank and Mary met there and when Frank was 18 and Mary was 15, they were married on September 28, 1917.

Nearly three years passed when the Lord blessed this home with a baby girl named Ethel Irene Hill, born on February 20, 1920. As you will see this is just one of the dozen times when a child came into this family.

Later on a son was born on March 6, 1922, named Warren G. Hill. He died while still a baby and is buried at what was the Hoover Graveyard and is now named Chapel Hill Cemetery in McDowell County, NC.

Another girl was born into this family on May 24, 1923, named Gladys Mae Hill. Later on another girl was born and named Ruby Ellen Hill on January 30 1926. You can easily see Mary's working in the mill days were over because she making a family.

The family moved to Kingsport, TN before another child was born, a son Lee Roy Hill, born on March 30, 1929. He died as a baby and is buried in Tennessee, although I don't know where.

The next child, a daughter, was born on May 15, 1930 and was named Nola Venetta Hill. The family had hard times here in Tennessee and moved up to Madison County, NC, where Mary's father then resided. Here another girl was born named Lillian Ruth Hill. She was born on September 23, 1931, and lived less than a year. She was laughing and bouncing on Mama's knee one night and the next morning she was dead. She is buried in the Woody Cemetery in Madison County.

The family then moved to Brackett's Township in McDowell County, NC where another girl was born named Myrtle Marie Hill on February 24, 1933. Times were still hard for this family. Daddy worked in the cotton mill and Mama took care of the children. While living in Brackett Town another daughter was born named Helen Louise Hill, on April 17, 1935.

Next the family moved up to the old Lou Reel place where a son, Robert James Hill was born on July 24, 1937. The family then moved a little way down the road to the old Baker Place, where another daughter was born on June 22, 1940, named Martha Jean Hill. When Martha was 11 months old in May of 1941, Daddy and Mama was in the field working in the corn, while Ruby was taking care of the small children. There was a tragic fire that destroyed the old home, but by the grace of God she had taken the 3 small children out with her, set them down half-way between the barn and the house, where she was putting up a calf that had gotten out. They saw the smoke over the trees and come running to the house where Daddy climbed upstairs to get Martha from her crib, but the fire nearly got him before he climbed out the basement. By this time Ethel and Gladys both were married, Ethel took Myrtle and Gladys took Helen to live with them. Daddy, Mama, Ruby, Nola and James and Martha lived in an old chicken house until Daddy could get another house built.

Last but not least another son was born on July 14, 1943, named Carl Franklin Hill. He was the only child born in a hospital. I remember them bringing Mama in an ambulance home and two men carrying her on a stretcher. This family has not had a lot of worldly goods in its time but we could always feel we were loved.

Daddy had a hard time and with no big boys to help him, we had the help of a black man named Walter Upton. As time passed by, the children married off to make lives of their own, leaving Mama and Daddy to themselves. Daddy still worked at the cotton mill, known as Clinchfield, where he retired.

Daddy and Mama had not lived for the Lord all this time, but years before they were to pass on both became Christians and were members of Bethlehem Baptist Church on Old Fort-Sugar Hill Road.

On December 13, 1966, Daddy tried to wake Mama up to show her the new snow but God had taken her home in the night. Heart broken, we laid her to rest on December 16, 1966 in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, and our lives have never been the same since she has been gone.

Several years later, Daddy found companionship with Mama's first cousin, Cleetie Randall. We loved her dearly and she never tried to take Mama's place, just be there for us when we needed her. They had several good years together and then Daddy got sick. He was in the King's Mountain Hospital, wanting desperately to get well to go to the Sun Rise Service at Bethlehem Church, when God took him to a sun rise service all of his own on Easter Sunday of April 11, 1982. I can just imagine what a meeting that was when Daddy and Mama were together again.

Cleetie lived nearly a year after Daddy died and she died on March 17, 1983.

All Daddy and Mama wanted was for us to be healthy and happy. As we gather each year let us take time to remember all the good times and good things God has blessed us with, so we can all be together with them in heaven someday.

1920 Census, McDowell Co., NC, Marion District, Park Street, Line # 254: Hill, Addie F, 20, Weaver; Mary M, 18, wife.
