Smathers one, and Sarah T Smathers and Mary Ann children of Haseltine the other, all parties of the second part witnessth that for and in consideration of the sum of 75.00 in hand, paid by ML Smathers and Marcus L Smathers the receipt and payment duly acknowledged, the party of the first part hath this day bargained and sold and do by these presents bargain and sell and in for convey with the parties of the second part all their heirs and assigns forever a certain tract of land bounded as follows: (the description was of land in Jackson County, NC which bordered Haywood County, NC) written July 18, 1878, filed in Jackson County, NC March 8, 1879, registered Dec 4, 1885.

George W. Smathers, Co. G., 52nd Georgia Infantry. Enlisted as Private March 4, 1862 at Blairsville, Georgia for 3 years. Pay sheet for Nov-Dec 1863 lists him as absent without leave since Oct 8, 1863. Present Aug 31 - Dec 31, 1862. He was admitted for medical treatment (diarrhea) three times in March and April, 1863. Paid $22.00 on June 21, 1863.

Amnesty Oath: To the Clerk of Superior Court of Union County, Georgia, the undersigned is desirous of taking the oath of amnesty authorized by the President U.S. May the 29, 1865. signed George W. Smathers.

The house on Red Bank Road in Haywood County, NC, inwhich Frank and Maude Smathers lived and, now Elsie Smathers lives in was originally built by George Smathers and his son Henry. George lived in the house for several years before moving to Washington.
