From a Buchanan Family History: Gola and Mary Buchanan reared their family on East Fork (Jackson Co., NC) near the old Buck and Hester Buchanan home. Gola, a bass singer and NC Highway Department employee, was known earlier as the "construction designer" of the Dry Flume, a counter-part to John Deitz' Wet Flume which originated in the Roaring Hole Laurel country at the extreme head of the creek. Gola's Dry Flume, which was gravity operated, descended rapidly from the great heights of the north side of the Painter Knob. Both flumes were used to chute acid (chestnut) wood. Gola died in 1951, is buried in East Fork Cemetery. Mary and the children, who know live near Lowell, NC, return annually to East Fork Cemetery on decoration day, in the month of June.
