Notes for ARTHUR FRED "PAT" DERRICK: Arthur Fred Derrick, 47, of Balsam died Saturday in the Haywood County Hospital after a long illness. He was a native of Transylvania County and a son of Newman and Nina McCall Derrick of Balsam. Surviving in addition to the parents are 3 sisters Mrs Harold Peebles of Candler, Mrs Leslie Ruff of Franklin and Mrs Bud Mehaffey of Hampton, Virginia; 4 brothers Lloyd and Walter of Balsam, Charles of Hazelwood and Robert Derrick of Fayetteville. Services are being held today at 2:30 PM in Balsam Baptist Church of which he was a member. The Rev OJ Beck and Rev Hardin Nicholson will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Knight, Gene Brooks, Bud Smathers, Gordon Smathers, Marshall Rich and Charles Beck. |

She was a native of Haywood County and a member of Balsam Baptist Church. Surviving are the husband Thomas J Revis, daughter Terrie Revis of the home, parents Mr and Mrs Newman Derrick of Balsam, 3 sisters Mrs Harold Peeble of Candler, Mrs Leslie Ruff of Franklin, Mrs Bud Mehaffey of Newport News, Va, 5 brothers Walter, Robert, Fred and Lloyd of Balsam and Charlie of Hazelwood. Services were held in Burnette Cove Baptist Church. Burial was in Gwyn Cemetery. |

Notes for WALTER NEWMAN DERRICK: Walter Newman Derrick, 54, Balsam View Drive, Balsam, died Friday, January 11, 1985, in an Asheville hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Haywood County, the son of Nina McCall Derrick of Balsam and the late Newman Derrick. He was employed by Hammer Mill Hardwoods Company in Jackson County. Surviving, in addition to the mother are three brothers, Lloyd and Robert Derrick of Balsam and Charles Derrick of Hazelwood; three sisters, Iris Peebles of Candler, Clara Mehaffey of Balsam and Anna Ruff of Hazelwood. Services were at 2 PM Sunday at Balsam Baptist Church where he was a member. Revs. Hardin Nicholson and David Bowers officiated with burial in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 9 PM Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home, Waynesville and at other times were at Nina Derrick's home. Pallbearers were Tony Bowers, Clifford Ruff, Tony Ruff, Tom McCall, Jerry Conner and James Kimbel. |

Notes for BOBBY RAY CRAWFORD: Waynesville Newspaper: Bobby Ray Crawford, 20, of Sylva, Rt 1, was killed instantly when the car in which he was riding jumped a median strip on I-40 near Old Fort Sunday afternoon, sideswiped one automobile and slammed broadside into another . Crawford, who was serving in the Navy, stationed aboard the USS Lowery at Norfolk, had been home on leave and was returning to Norfolk. He had been picked up by the driver of the car. Another young man, Charles Woodrow Melton, 18, of Old Fort, also a passenger in the car, died two hours later in a Marion hospital. Crawford was a son of Mr and Mrs AC Crawford, Sr. of Rt 1, Sylva. Other survivors are seven sisters Mrs Verlin Crisp of Balsam, Mrs Fred Wright and Mrs Clarence Wright of Canton, Mrs William Roberts of Brevard, Mrs Roy Lee Galloway and Mrs Hugh Allison, Jr of Dellwood and Miss Thelma Crawford of the home; two 1/2 sisters Mrs Herman Frady of Canton and Mrs JW McGinness of Vader, Washington; and four brothers AC Crawford Jr of McAdenville, NC, Lewis of Cramerton, NC, Jack of Memphis, TN and Ray Crawford of Sylva. |
