John Lewis Moody, 74, died Thursday, July 20, 1995, at his home (Bothell, Washington). A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Mrytle Mehaffey Moody and the late Clifton Moody. He was former owner and operator of Moody's Automotive in Bellevue, Wash. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Bill Moody, in 1994. Surviving, in addition to the mother, Mrytle Moody of Waynesville, are his wife, Patircia O'Toole Moody; two sons, David and Brian Moody of Washington; one daughter, Sally Moody of Washington; two sisters, Alva Jo Carver of Maggie Valley and Wanda Sutton of Waynesville. Funeral services were held Monday in Bothell. Burial was in Old Pioneer Cemetery. A memorial service was held at 7:30 PM Tuesday at Waynesville Christian Fellowship. Clayton Davis gave the message.

She married VINSON DAVIS, son of M.B. DAVIS and EMMA CAMP. He was born April 16, 1898 in Haywood Co., NC, and died October 19, 1944 in Haywood Co., NC.

Kenneth Jack Dillard, 69, of 536 Oakdale Road, Waynesville, died Wednesday, Aug 14, at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late William E and Wilsie Mehaffey Dillard. He was self employed as a rock mason and a service station owner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Phillips Dillard, who died in November 1983. Surviving are his wife, Dale Mease Baker; three daughters, Brenda Meyer of Tampa, Fla, Kendra Dillard of St Paul, Minn, and Teresa Dillard of Waynesville; one son, Kenny Dillard Jr of Waynesville; four step children, Karen Prusia and Tammy Warlick, both of Waynesville, Kurt Reinert of Las Vegas, Nev, and Skip Reinert of Milwaukee, Wis; three sisters, Mary D Swanger of Chattanooga, TN, Johnnie Sue Caldwell of Clyde and Jo Ellen Dillard of Waynesville; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; and 10 step grandchildren. Services will be held at 7 pm Friday in the Chapel of Wells Funeral Home, Waynesville. Committal service will be held at 11 AM Saturday at Greenhill Cemetery. The Rev Philip Wyatt will officiate. Pallbearers will be Mark Warlick, Jerome Buchanan, Kurt and Skip Reinert, Steve Childers and Stacey Howell. The family will receive friends immediately following the service Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Holy Grove Freewill Baptist Church, 1209 Allens Creek Rd, Waynesville, NC 28786.

He married BETTY JANE GIBSON 1946.

ILFRED RUFUS MEHAFFEY:
Wilfred "Wolf" Rufus Mehaffey, 81, of 629 East St., Waynesville, died Tuesday, July 27, at the VA Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late John Estes and Alva Etta Smathers Mehaffey. He retired in 1966 as master sergeant for the US Army with 21 years of service. He was a former employee of Biltmore Dairy, Waynesville Police Department and the Haywood County Sheriff's Department. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 47 and a member of East Fork Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Betty Jane Gibson Mehaffey; four daughters, Carolyn Jean Bartam of Waynesville, Sandra Elizabeth Cuzzort of Clover, SC, Barbara Ann West of Canton and Patrice Rickman of Asheville; one son, William Jack Mehaffey of Waynesville; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Maple Springs Cemetery with military graveside rites by a detachment from Fort Bragg.

Roy Charles Brooks, 54, of Balsam died in the Haywood County Hospital Monday after a long illness. Surviving are the widow Mary Etta Jones Brooks, son Tommy of Hazelwood, 3 brothers Elmer of Washington, DC, Ernest of Lenoir and Eugene of Balsam, 3 sisters Mrs James Coward of Balsam, Mrs Fred Farmer of Waynesville, Rt 1, and Mrs Glenn Rogers of Hazelwood, the parents Mr and Mrs Phillip Brooks of Balsam and a grandchild. Services were held Wednesday at 2:30 PM in the Balsam Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Bryson, Frank and Herman Arrington, George Knight, Harold Rogers and Sammy Barnett.

Waynesville Newspaper, Oct 26, 1944: Picture of Lloyd Terrell Derrick with following: PFC Loyd Terrell Derrick, son of Mr and Mrs AN Derrick of Balsam, has been awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious action while in combat in France. PFC Derrick is serving with the First Army and is at present somewhere in Germany.
