Notes for GEORGIA ARTHERENE "RENE" SMATHERS: Georgia Arhurene "Rene" S. Hollars, 60, of 125 Highview St., Forest City died Thursday, April 8 at NC Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of Dorothy Norris Smathers and the late Charles "Tom" Smathers. She was a member of Crestview Baptist Church and retired from Burlington Industries, JC Cowan Plant. She was preceded in death by two sons, Tim L. Stamey and Troy L. Hollars; and one sister, Claudette Ann Smathers Simms Dutra. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Jack Hollars; three sons, Mike Hollars of Spindale, Steve and Doug Hollars, both of Cliffside; two brothers, Joseph Smathers of North Wilkesboro and Robert Smathers of Mooresboro; one sister Carolyn Parsons of Lexington; and two grandchildren. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Park in Rutherford County, NC. |

Notes for JAMES DOUGLAS SMATHERS: The Mountaineer, Monday, February 26, 1973: James Douglas Smathers, 25, of Waynesville was killed Friday in Seattle, Washington, when his pick-up truck left the roadway, overturned and burned according to Washington State Patrol. Smathers was attached to a Coast Guard Reserve Unit at Sand Point Naval Support Activity Base in Seattle. He entered the service in 1964. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Smathers of Waynesville, half brother, John E. Kuykendall of Fayettville, the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Charlie Smathers. |
