PVT Hill attended the local high school and at the time he entered the service was employed by the Barber Orchards. During his 20 month overseas service he has been able to visit several North Africa places featured in the news earlier in the war, among them were Dakar, in West Africa; Algiers; Oran; Tripoli and Casablanca. Nieces were flowerbearers.

Noel falsified his military records in order to enlist early. He stated his birth date as September 6, 1919, and that is the date on his military grave stone. The birth date listed in Bud and Mary Elizabeth's bible is September 6, 1921, which is the date celebrated as his birth day. A birth certificate for him can not be located, however, there is a birth certificate on file in the Haywood County Court House for an unnamed male child born to William Albert and Mary Elizabeth Clark Hill on 29 Oct 1920 (could this be the correct birth date of Noel Hill?)
